Job Summary

RISD Dining is actively seeking a Vending Lead to join its in-house dining, catering, and markets and vending program. Be a part of the group that delivers exceptional hospitality by supporting local farms through seasonally-inspired menus, and utilizing the strengths of its staff to provide the absolute best in culinary artistry to the greater community.

The Vending Lead provides support to the General Manager of Markets and Vending by completing a variety of administrative duties to meet the needs and interests of a creative and diverse community. Regularly follows up with clients via phone and email, checks voicemail, and follows through with all necessary replies and/or actions. Regularly checks and processes market orders placed via Mobile Ordering System, and processes vending reports.

Essential Functions

In support of Dining and Catering’s mission and values, the incumbent may be called upon to perform any one or a combination of the following functions listed below:

  • Perform a wide variety of administrative duties in a timely manner, including, but not limited to answering phones, taking notes; maintaining client/vendor forms and files; and serving as the initial point of contact for a variety of questions relating to market, convenience store, or vending, utilizing cordial, service-oriented, and open communication with all clients and other staff/faculty.

  • Stock vending machines throughout campus. Process vending reimbursements. Communicate issues with market and vending manager and proactively and collaboratively work toward solutions.

  • Maintain par levels for dry goods and pantry items and complete inventorying of various food items and supplies using FIFO (first in, first out) including paper, beverages, and dry goods. Place orders, as needed.

  • Update and maintain the content of mobile ordering system with available offerings and ensure it is current and accurate.

  • Draft staff schedule and truck schedule, as needed. Serve as the first point of contact for questions. Guide student workers.

  • Work collaboratively with the department’s IT/Applications Support Specialist in the effective configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems software and hardware used in vending. Runs reports within all the vending systems.Participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. Ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values. Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks.Identify approaches that leverage RISD resources and provide economies of scale. Initially investigates and troubleshoots issues and works with Systems Specialist and/or vendor for resolution. Participates in upgrades and configuration system software that supports RISD Vending applications per project or operational needs.



Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience

  • A high school diploma or equivalent combination education and experience, and minimum of two years of experience in a fast-paced customer service environment preferably with food service, event, or catering experience.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students and discerning external clientele and maintain composure and a customer-service oriented mindset.

  • Must be detail oriented.

  • Ability to work in a diverse community and to communicate effectively across differences and with members of a diverse team.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft office and Google Platforms.

  • Rhode Island sanitation/ServSafe certification or must be completed within the review period.

  • A valid driver’s license.



Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of the food industry and products and retail sales experience.
  • Prior experience stocking and programming vending machines.
  • Desire to learn and use new technologies.

Work Schedule

Coverage is seven days per week (two days off) and can include daytime, evening, and weekend hours.

All dining and catering staff is considered essential personnel to the school and are therefore required to attend work even when the school is closed.
