Department Summary
The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 200 student staff, and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU welcomes students, faculty, staff, the community and visitors to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity and social interaction. The EMU is student centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who are actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approve the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.

Position Summary
The EMU Laborer position is part of the Facilities team and reports to the Building Superintendent. This position is responsible labor support for skilled trades workers, general maintenance including hanging banners, maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary conditions in and around the Erb Memorial Union. Duties may also include sanitation of restrooms, floor and window care, cleaning of the building and all grounds attached, garbage and recycling, and moving furniture. This position is expected to provide excellent customer service to all EMU staff and visitors, demonstrate and promote effective and respectful communication with and between staff, management, building users and other campus departments, and exhibit appropriate behavior in the workplace, creating a respectful work environment. This position is expected to work on a team and independently.

The person in this position will work directly with the Building Superintendent and provide assistance to open the EMU and affiliated buildings each day. This includes, but is not limited to the Club Sports boathouse, Moss Street Children's Center and the Outdoor Program Barn. Duties include: using a leaf blower daily on exterior, cleaning gutters, power washing, graffiti removal, moving furniture and stored items, delivering items to facilities from EMU, painting and staining, and spreading bark and sand. This position also serves as a back-up for sanitation of restrooms, floor and window care, and garbage and recycling, when needed.

The person in this position is expected to provide excellent customer service to all EMU staff and visitors, demonstrate and promote effective and respectful communication with staff, management, building users and other campus departments. They will exhibit appropriate behavior in the workplace, creating a respectful work environment. They will work successfully on a team and independently, depending on the task. This position is responsible for supervising student employees.

Work Schedule
The work shift will vary depending on the time of year and use of the building. The general work shift is Monday through Friday, 6:30a.m. - 3:30 p.m. This position requires a flexible work schedule agreement.

Work Conditions
This position may require a high level of physical exertion. Work may include heavy lifting or transporting of items weighing up to 50 pounds, extensive walking on smooth and uneven surfaces, stair climbing, working in inclement weather, overhead work on ladders, prolonged bending, stretching, reaching, squatting, kneeling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. The work environment may include freezers, coolers, service tunnels and basement spaces, poorly lit or noisy areas.

Essential Personnel
Weather/nature conditions change rapidly in the Pacific Northwest. As a result of this, there are certain EMU personnel who are considered essential at all times to maintain the continuity of critical operations and business during and after a disaster or natural event. This position is one of those required positions necessitating that the employee make every reasonable effort to arrive at campus at their regularly scheduled times unless otherwise notified by their supervisor or manager. Essential personnel must provide reliable and current contact information.

Special Requirements:
This position performs work at Moss Street Children's Center. As such, successful completion of the Childcare Registry background check is required.
This position will require a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain UO Driver's Certification.

Minimum Requirements
Three years of general building maintenance experience in one or more of the following trade areas: carpentry, electrical, mechanical, painting, plumbing, and welding.

  • Experience with woodworking
  • Experience with basic welding
