The Department of Pathology seeks aPro Fee Supervisor who will supervise the Accounts Receivable Staff responsible for ensuring that all third-party reimbursement is at expected levels and work directly with Third Party Reimbursement to resolve payer issues. This role will provide staff oversight for the submission of both paper and electronic claims to all primary and secondary third-party payers and will assist in developing office policies and procedures, serve as a lead for troubleshooting, problem solving and will be expected to exercise independent judgment. They will complete tasks as needed and defined by department management. This position requires a thorough understanding of medical billing and experience using the appropriate billing system. They will maintain strict confidentiality of staff and patient information as well as promote team work and identify areas of improvement and recommend coordinated actions to bring about changes.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Procedural Knowledge:

  • Interviews, and makes recommendations for hiring, termination, and other performance related functions.
  • Provides direct staff supervision to include training, orientation, maintaining work schedules, and assigning workflow.
  • Monitors the quality and productivity of staff and documents performance and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Communicates with patients, physicians, insurance companies and other departments as applicable.
  • Exercises discretion and good judgment in resolution of daily issues.
  • Assists with controlling expenditures, purchasing, payroll, record control and other administrative activities.
  • Assists with developing, interpreting, monitoring, implementing and maintaining CPA Policy and Procedures.
  • Develops and prepares financial and statistical reports for management and CPA analysis.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Working knowledge of JHU/ PBS Billing Applications.

Professional and Personal Development:

  • Assist in the training of staff.
  • Keep current of industry changes by reading assigned material on work related topics.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Five years experience in a medical billing environment including one year lead or supervisor experience. Additional education beyond minimum experience qualifications may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in a related field.
  • CPC strongly preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of medical billing and experience using the appropriate billing system.
  • Knowledge of JHM and JHU/PBS billing applications.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • Professional Coder Certification (CPC).

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Supervises Coding Specialists.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
