The Johns Hopkins/SAIS Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies was founded in 2004 with a generous gift from the Merrill Family Foundation. The Philip Merrill Center has been a primary resource for the John Hopkins SAIS community and beyond, promoting strategic thought and education, along with dialogue and scholarship on major national security and defense issues. It aims to promote discussion and innovative research on the central and emerging issues of national security.

As a center for strategic thinking, the Merrill Center focuses on bringing practitioners, scholars, journalists, and other experts to explore the substance and practical consequences of key issues. With this aim, the Merrill Center sponsors conferences and small seminars on contemporary and future security issues. It leads workshops and training to foster strategic thinking on the broad challenges the United States faces today and, in the years, ahead.

​As a center for education, it brings outside speakers to the Johns Hopkins SAIS community and supports graduate students’ extracurricular activities, speaker series, internships, trainings, and other sources of experiential learning. We are seeking a Merrill Center Administrator (Program Coordinator) who will report to the Director of the Merrill Center.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Individual must be able to work in a demanding, fast paced, and collaborative work environment.
  • Possess the ability to multi-task and prioritize, with flexibility to shift among changing requirements.
  • Must possess excellent writing skills, research, and communication skills.
  • Draft grants/government funding proposals and work closely with the SAIS business and development offices to ensure requirements and deadlines are met and that funds are handled appropriately.
  • Guide students from the SAIS, Duke University, University of Texas-Austin consortium in planning a two-day Civil-Military conference.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of the Annual Bernstein Lecture.
  • Play a key role in planning/preparation of the annual week-long national security studies program in Vermont
  • Prepare and respond to correspondence and other donor requested documents.
  • Maintain all social media platforms, updating the website and preparation of a donor newsletter.
  • Administer and update information on the external website and internal portal to ensure accuracy and updates.
  • Provide additional administrative support as required.
  • Be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

​Preferred Qualifications

    High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Five years of progressively responsible experience working in higher education, non-profit, or other government entity, or other related experience required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultures Experience working in university setting

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
