Job Description:

Washington and Lee University seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and experienced fundraising professional to serve as its inaugural Director of Development for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

Reporting to the Director of Leadership Giving, the Director will be a strong partner with the Dean for Diversity, Inclusion and Student Engagement and the Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, among other offices focused on accelerating Strategic Plan initiatives. The Director is a gifted professional with an exceptional track record building relationships and coalitions with internal and external constituents.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a central tenant of W&L’s strategic plan, adopted in 2018. The University has invested greatly in this effort including creating a dedicated physical space for a Center for DEI, building out programming and, most recently, allocating $10M in additional funding from the endowment to accelerate this work. W&L’s commitment to DEI extends to all facets of the University including student life, academics, admissions, employee hiring, faculty recruitment and retention, and Institutional history.

Essential Functions:
  • Leads fundraising efforts for DEI by dedicating a significant portion of time to fundraising from established donors while identifying new prospective donors.

  • Manages and grows a portfolio of current and prospective donors for W&L’s top DEI initiatives. This portfolio will include both individuals and foundations.

  • Works with colleagues in Development to incorporate DEI best practices and philanthropic priorities into Annual and Reunion Giving efforts.

  • Works with the Executive Director of Development, Director of Leadership Giving and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the creation and implementation of short-term and long-term fundraising goals and objectives for DEI and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects.

  • Travels nationally to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects for DEI giving opportunities.

  • Participates in larger DEI-related activities at W&L including, retreats and meetings as needed to develop a clear understanding of the University’s broader vision for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to support fundraising priorities and the University’s Strategic Plan.

  • Develops and maintains an astute awareness of best practices for engaging diverse constituents and communities and serves as an expert liaison on philanthropy in diverse cultures for the W&L community.

  • Represents Washington and Lee nationally as an active member, presenter and in select leadership roles in strategic fundraising and advancement organizations such as the Council of the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), to ensure W&L is seen as a leader in the field of advancement.

  • Serves as a contributing member of University Development, and the broader University Advancement team, in furthering Washington and Lee's mission and will perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required. Experience in a University setting, non-profit or foundation working with people from historically underrepresented populations is preferred. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable of issues and best practices related to diversity, inclusion, social justice, equity and intersectionality.

The ideal candidate will have a high degree of personal integrity; ability to communicate and work well with others; willingness to solicit gifts; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; a strong customer service orientation; ability to deal effectively and discreetly with donors, colleagues and allied professionals; talent for motivating others; a high level of computer literacy; high levels of energy, motivation, enthusiasm, humility and a sense of humor are necessary.

The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and new employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.

Physical Requirements:
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Types of Work: Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work Schedule: M-F, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm with occasional nights and weekend hours required. Frequent travel will be required.

A remote work schedule will be considered.
