Director of The Texas Collection & University Archives (Assistant or Associate Librarian)

The Baylor University Libraries seek applications for the position of Director of The Texas Collection & University Archives. This academic professional with faculty status provides leadership, vision, and direction for The Texas Collection & University Archives and is responsible for the strategic planning and day-to-day operations of the library and archives. The Director also provides administrative oversight of Baylor at Independence, the original site of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Independence, Texas.

Celebrating its centennial in 2023, The Texas Collection is one of the largest Texana collections in the world. While focused on the Lone Star State, The Texas Collection also holds information on the Southwest, Mexico, westward expansion, and beyond. Materials date from the 15th century to the present and tell the story of Texas from pre-Republic, Republic of Texas, and statehood. Scholars from all over the world come to The Texas Collection to research facets of Texas including history, agriculture, literature, religion, politics, and education. The Texas Collection hosts Baylor classes and provides special presentations and programming for the public. The mission of the University Archives is to collect, preserve, and provide access to records related to Baylor University. Materials in the University Archives shine a light on the important decisions that have made Baylor the institution it is today, providing valuable insight into our storied past.

The Baylor University Libraries support teaching, learning, and research at Baylor University and consist of the Moody and Jones Libraries, Armstrong Browning Library, Arts & Special Collections Research Center, Institute for Oral History, Keston Center for Religion, Politics, and Society, Library and Academic Technology Services, W. R. Poage Legislative Library, and The Texas Collection & University Archives with over 2.5 million volumes, significant holdings in e-journals, e-books, databases, and other digital content (

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership, vision, and direction for The Texas Collection & University Archives and fosters an inclusive and collaborative work environment
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the library and archives, including supervision of faculty and staff
  • Oversees and administers the budget and endowments
  • Provides administrative oversight of Baylor at Independence, the original site of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Independence, Texas
  • Prioritizes building and managing a research collection that reflects the diversity of Texas
  • Promotes the visibility and advocates for the use of The Texas Collection & University Archives
  • Identifies and develops successful relationships with potential donors of materials
  • Seeks funding from grants, foundations, and donors by working with the Dean of University Libraries and University fundraising officers
  • Works collaboratively and collegially across all Baylor University Libraries and with faculty and staff across the University
  • Serves as a member of the Baylor University Libraries leadership team
  • Participates in Libraries and University organizations, committees, and task forces
  • Meets University expectations for scholarship and service, including active participation in local, regional, national, and international organizations
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program, or other relevant degree, plus seven or more years of experience working in a library, archive, or special collection
  • Successful management experience, including the ability to manage and develop staff
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and competing priorities

Desired Job Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of library and archival theory, methods, and practices
  • Experience with budget management, fundraising, and outreach
  • Familiarity with Alma/Primo, CuadraSTAR, and Quartex, or other library and archival management systems
  • Knowledge of Texas history or a willingness to develop an expertise in this area
