Position Summary:

The Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine is soliciting applications for a full-time Teaching Professor in Emergency and Critical Care. The successful candidate will join the ECC team, which is currently comprised of 3 clinical track faculty, five residents, nine rotating interns, one ECC specialty intern, and 22 technicians.

Principal Duties:

A successful candidate for the Teaching Professor Track (Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor) position in Emergency and Critical Care will have primary responsibilities in clinical and didactic teaching as well as providing emergency clinical service in the hospital at UW-Veterinary Care. Teaching is the major responsibility of this position and individuals in the Teaching Professor Track at UW-Madison are involved in independent classroom, clinical and laboratory instruction as well as community and educational outreach efforts specific to their academic or clinical discipline.

In addition, instructional design and development or enhancement of academic content through the use of instructional technology, participating in curriculum development and other activities related to teaching, dissemination of teaching methods and practice of small animal emergency and critical care medicine are expected.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide up to 36 weeks of clinical service per annum and the successful candidate is expected to be either board certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care or Board eligible at the time of appointment. Excellence in mentoring of clinical skills by residents and interns is expected. Involvement or mentoring in clinical research projects conducted by residents is encouraged, but not required.

Clinical duties will include patient care, instruction and supervision of veterinary students, residents and interns, and consultation with referring veterinarians and clients at UW emergency Veterinary Care, which has an approximate caseload of over 6000 cases per year.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

DVM (or equivalent) is required; Board certification or board eligibility in Emergency and Critical Care required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Academic experience or relevant practice experience beyond residency training is preferred but not mandatory. Aptitude and/or experience in clinical instruction of DVM students, interns, and residents are also expected. Distribution of effort in the section and the Department will be determined in accordance with service needs, academic priorities and the candidate's expertise and academic goals. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with all sections of the hospital and department.

License or Certificate:

Board certification or board eligibility in Emergency and Critical Care required.

Additional Information:

The School of Veterinary Medicine is part of a leading public research institution on the UW-Madison campus. Research is not required as part of this position; however, opportunities exist for the successful applicant to become involved in clinical or basic science research during off-clinic time.

Extensive opportunities for collaborative research exist within the School of Veterinary Medicine and the UW-Madison campus. The School of Medicine & Public Health, the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences and the Biotechnology Center are located within a short distance of the School of Veterinary Medicine on the UW-Madison campus. A close relationship also exists with the Wisconsin State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory which is located adjacent to the School of Veterinary Medicine. UW-Madison considers the School of Veterinary Medicine to be a major factor in its overall success as a top five university in terms of awarded federal funding. The school is also a major factor in Madison's emergence as a hub of commercial biotechnology, including regenerative medicine technologies.
