The Running Start Academic Advisor provides holistic academic advising to Running Start students, who are co-enrolled in high school and Highline College. The primary function of the Academic Advisor is to advise and support students as they transition to the college environment and prepare for their future educational or career goals. The Academic Advisor guides Running Start students towards the completion of high school graduation requirements and their college program of study. Examples of scope and responsibilities include: helping students identify academic programs, interests and goals, services and resources, and developing proactive strategies and solutions for college transition, academic success, career exploration, degree completion, and university transfer. Advising may be conducted on a one-on-one basis, in group or classroom settings, via phone, video conferencing platform, learning management system, and through student programming.

Running Start, a Washington State co-enrollment program allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll in college courses at any of Washington’s 34 community and technical colleges. Highline College enrolls 1400+ Running Start students annually. The Running Start Office is responsible for administering the Running Start program, which includes enrollment management, student orientation and advising, low-income fee waiver and textbook assistance. The person in this position is expected to participate fully as a member of the unit, supporting other functions as needed.

Essential Tasks

Reporting to the Director of Running Start, this position will:

Academic Advising (70%)
  • Provide academic advising to Running Start students on academic degree options and requirements, course selection, college policies and processes, university transfer, and career preparation;
  • Facilitate new student orientation sessions; present information to new Running Start students on policies and resources, assist students with course selection;
  • Engage students in goal-setting and the development of long-term educational plans, including transfer and career planning;
  • Teach students how to navigate the college environment, access campus resources, and utilize advising tools;
  • Interpret and communicate academic policies and procedures to students, parents, college faculty and staff, and high school counselors;
  • Evaluate unofficial high school and college transcripts to discuss course placement and program eligibility with students;
  • Adhere to institutional, state, and federal policies related to confidentiality, program administration and reporting;
  • Maintain student records by documenting and summarizing advising sessions;
  • Facilitate Running Start information sessions for groups of prospective students, parents, and the general public;
  • Make referrals to various campus departments and services when appropriate.

Program Support (20%)
  • Greet students, parents and visitors at the front desk or via virtual lobby and provide general information;
  • Develop and update advising guides, forms, publications, and web pages;
  • Develop and coordinate student communication plans for Running Start students and subgroups, utilizing email, phone, social media, and other modes of communication;
  • Process Running Start forms and documents including applications, enrollment forms, and textbook requests;
  • Create academic advising training guides and materials as necessary;
  • Perform general office tasks such as responding to phone and email inquiries, filing, coding, and scanning as assigned.

Community and Professional Development (10%)
  • Participate as a member of the Advising and Enrollment Services team, assisting with support and collaborating with other departments
  • Provide input of policies, processes and procedures to advance the college and unit missions and objectives;
  • Actively engage in campus committees, meetings, events, trainings, and professional development opportunities to further develop professional competencies and knowledge;
  • Remain well-informed on promising practices and trends in academic advising, student services, and dual enrollment;
  • Develop collaborative relationships across campus departments, with high schools, and transfer institutions;
  • Serve as a representative of both the department and Highline College at campus and community events.

  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism by contributing to a positive work environment and a commitment to high-quality work;
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills with an ability to manage timelines and details;
  • Ability problem solve and make recommendations for improvements;
  • Thorough understanding and ability to maintain the confidentiality of protected information;
  • Able to navigate an electronic environment proficient with Microsoft Office, Google drive, web browsers, with a preference for PeopleSoft and Campus Solutions;
  • Ability to articulate the college mission through action.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution AND
  • Minimum one year of experience in academic advising, counseling, or closely related role
Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education, student development, higher education administration, counseling, psychology, or related field
  • Experience working with Running Start or similar program
  • Experience working with high school-aged students or experience working in a higher education setting
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Campus Solutions
  • Fluency in languages other than English
