The Group Fitness Coordinator reports to and assists the Associate Director for Fitness Programs with the daily operations of the Syracuse University Fitness program, specific to small and large-scale group fitness classes. This position has personnel management responsibilities that include the training, development and daily supervision of approximately 35-40 group fitness instructors and 10 student fitness assistants. Program oversight demands will vary to coincide with program schedule. The Group Fitness Coordinator will establish relationships and collaborate with other departments throughout the University to enhance group fitness class marketing efforts, participant attendance incentives and instructional programs specific to recruiting and training group fitness instructors. This position will provide a diverse array of classes, educational workshops, and specialty programming to engage a broad spectrum of students and members of the university community. Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, sports management, kinesiology, human development or other relevant field required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in training and supervision of multiple part time staff utilizing best practices for customer service.
  • Demonstrated pursuit of personal professional development through participation in a national industry association or organization.
  • Two (2) plus years relevant professional experience with group exercise/personal training program in university setting.
  • Variable work schedule. Evening and weekend work required. Primary work schedule during academic year is M-F 10:00am-6:30pm.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, proficient computer skills, ability to use sound management principles, and work effectively with ethnically and culturally diverse constituencies.
  • Current Group Exercise Instructor certification from a nationally recognized fitness organization such as the AFAA, NSCA or ACSM or comparable certification.
  • Current Personal Training certification preferred.
  • Ability to teach a variety of class formats on an as needed basis.
Job Specific Qualifications
Current First Aid/ CPR / AED certification Responsibilities
  • Manage Group Fitness programs including recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and
  • evaluating 35 – 40 instructors and 10 student fitness assistants. Includes scheduling classes, managing class registrations and marketing programs.
  • Develop and oversee Group Fitness incentive program. Teach classes as needed. Provide evening coverage during academic year, as needed.
  • Create and implement ongoing training/ professional development for new and returning group fitness instructors, including organizing in services and certification workshops.
  • Work collaboratively with other service units within Barnes Center to facilitate and manage group fitness class attendance, create and market incentives to encourage class participation.
  • Collect data and conduct program assessment for all drop in and pre-registration group fitness class programming.
  • Process payroll for Group Fitness staff and purchase and maintain Group Fitness equipment.
