Job Summary

Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) welcomes applications for a Behavioral Health Counselor. This collaborative and dynamic position is part of a team of mental health providers embedded in the Medical Services clinic. As a Counselor, you will provide a wide range of services including crisis intervention, skills training, behavioral medicine, case management, brief therapy as well as mental health consultation and care coordination with providers in Medical Services.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

On-Call Triage:
  • Provide in-person or telehealth intervention/assessment to students being seen in the medical clinic who have indicated mental health concerns through assessments (safety or brief functional assessment, behavioral medicine, crisis intervention, and clinical case management).

Follow-Up Care:
  • Develop strengths-based crisis and treatment plans based on client goals, needs, and resources, and promote resiliency and engagement with mental health services and supportive resources.
  • Engage with student populations who are traditionally underserved by current systems to reduce barriers to engaging in services. Conduct skills workshops.

Crisis Care Coordination:
  • Advise clinic staff regarding emergent situations and care of high acuity clients. Collaborate with third-party agencies, university departments, and members of the student’s community (family, friends, faculty, etc.) to assess crisis reports and recommend responses.
  • Track students who are contacted by first responders and/or transported to hospital/crisis units to deliver information for continuity of care and coordinate aftercare.
  • Develop collaborative working relationships with police, first responders, and local hospitals/crisis centers.
  • Coordinate referrals for resources and engage in relationship building with community mental health resources and campus departments to ensure outstanding care for students.


What We Can Offer

  • Starting salary is dependent on licensure and experience. For MSW/LPC's, salary range is $57,750-$78,921; for psychologists: $77,700-$106,184.

What We Require

  • Completion of an MSW, Ph.D, Psy.D, LPC or LMFT from an accredited program.
  • Licensed in the state of Colorado by the date of hire.
  • Experience with clinical issues, ranging from developmental issues to more serious psychopathology.
  • Experience providing brief therapy.
  • Experience with electronic medical record-keeping and documentation.
  • Experience and interest in working with university students from multicultural backgrounds and historically marginalized populations.

What We Would Like You To Have

  • 2+ years of professional experience providing psychotherapy and psychological assessment in a mental health setting as a licensed LCSW.
  • 1 year of experience providing Behavioral Health assessment and treatment services.
  • Experience working in an integrated care model and/or medical setting.
  • Experience with college-aged population.
  • Experience treating substance use disorders and/or eating disorders.
  • Training in motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, CBT, ACT, and other models suitable for brief treatment.
