The Director of Development will coordinate and oversee fundraising activities to generate contributed income for Syracuse Stage from all sources, including individuals, corporations and foundations, government and in-kind donations. Other specific roles of the Director include:

• Develop strong working relationships with Syracuse Stage Board of Trustees, funders, community members, and staff to achieve budgeted financial goals.
• Implement and oversee logistics for donor/cultivation events including but not limited to the annual Syracuse Stage gala, opening night events and other projects as assigned.
• Recruit, develop, and supervise development department staff of three.
• Serve as a key member of teams tasked with raising funds in support of capital and endowment campaigns.
• Participate actively in Stage’s senior staff team, including in strategic planning and antiracism, equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.

Qualifications

• Five (5) plus years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, preferably for an arts or educational institution.
• Demonstrated success in solicitation of gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations. Commitment to developing and leading fundraising staff.
• Understanding of Syracuse and its philanthropic community a plus.
• Impeccable attention to detail.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Demonstrated success with personal, corporate, and foundation solicitations.
• Strong writing, planning and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to work with other development professionals.
• Ability to recruit, develop and lead a team of development professionals.
• Experience working with constituent database. Familiarity with the performing arts and an understanding of Syracuse’s philanthropic community a plus.
• Highly professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information.
• A commitment to advance anti-racism in all aspects of the work of Syracuse Stage and Syracuse University as manifested by the evolving Syracuse Stage Anti-Racism Action Plan.

Responsibilities

• Designs and implements a development plan for each season to achieve budgeted goals for all areas of contributed income, including capital campaign, strategic action plans, timelines for initiatives and cash flows, budget and comprehensive plans for donor benefits.
• Plans and develops annual individual giving campaigns, including Circles solicitations and Angel Appeal. Strengthens and promotes planned giving campaign.
• Supervises implementation of plan with development staff.
• Develops concepts for all solicitation and printed materials.
• Collaborates as appropriate with staff in Syracuse University Advancement and External Affairs (SU- AEA ) on jointly beneficial strategies and actions.
• Enters information in the SU- AEA Constituent Relations Management software ( CITRUS – CRM ) as appropriate.
• Oversees and tracks annual proposals and reports for county, state and federal government grants, corporations and foundations.
• Writes or assigns writing of proposals and assured timely delivery to meet deadlines.
• Researches and develops new sources of government and foundation funding in conjunction with programmatic and or project needs to Stage.
• Completes annual and intermittent reporting on grants as required by funders.
• Nurtures and maintains ongoing relationships and dialogue with Board of Trustees.
• Serves as staff liaison to Board’s Development Committee to maximize potential giving.
• Monitors board participation in all fundraising activities and works with the Managing Director and Board Chair to ensure Board development and motivation in the area of fundraising.
• Serves as an active leader in Stage’s senior staff team, including strategic planning and anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts.
• Works with an Assistant Director of Development to establish annual budgets and goals for Syracuse Stage gala and other fundraising events, including concepts for events, dates, locations, timelines, and artists.
• Oversees fundraising and logistics for the events, including table sponsorship sales initiatives.
