Position Summary

The College of Engineering wishes to appoint an Academic Professional Associate in Community Design and Landscape Architecture to work on a grant funded research project: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Engineering with Nature Initiative. In this role they will be work under the direct supervision of Dr. Brian Bledsoe, Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor and Director of the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems ( IRIS ), at the College of Engineering’s School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering ( ECAM ). The position will also work closely with public service faculty members with the Carl Vinson Institute for Government and Georgia Sea Grant.

The successful candidate will help ensure that the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems ( IRIS ) can successfully meet the research and programmatic requirements for the research and development cooperative agreement between IRIS and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center. The funding for this position was included in the initial project budget. Continuation is subject to continued support from external funding sources.

The primary emphasis of the position will be to collaborate with established scholars and practitioners in the community design, landscape architecture, environmental planning, and nature-based engineering fields to advance the integration of natural and conventional infrastructure systems to strengthen society’s long-term resilience to flooding, sea level rise, drought and other disruptions. The position will support and/or conduct design, research, and training to expand and accelerate the use of natural infrastructure in the public and private sectors.

Responsibilities
In this role the candidate’s responsibilities would consist of:
  • Creates and develop illustrative design informed by research and best practices that generate knowledge and capacity to integrate nature based design within urban and rural landscapes. Manages qualitative and quantitative research in the landscape and community design fields, including the design, management, illustration and delivery of design projects. (70%)
  • Directs and/or oversees the development of design approaches that support research and training to expand and accelerate the practice of natural infrastructure in the public and private sectors (20%).
  • Identifies publication and/or presentation opportunities for landscape and community design in professional journals and at professional meetings and conferences. Directs and participates in the preparation of journal articles, scholarly papers, and presentations of research at professional and academic meetings. Presents designs to local, state, and federal clients (10%)
