Position Summary
The Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences ( PBS ) in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Georgia is seeking candidates for a newly created Assistant Research Scientist faculty position to help propel research focusing on the generation of anti-viral compounds for treatment of numerous pathologies in the laboratory of Dr. David Chu. This position will also aid in the delivery of the Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science Curriculum in PBS . The allocation of effort for this position at appointment will be 24% teaching and 76% research/scholarship. This position is expected to teach 6.4 credit hours/year. This allocation of effort may be revised during the term of employment. Continuation of employment is expressly subject to continued support from external funding sources, which is currently good for, at the most, two years. Additional Requirements Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • 3 years of post doc or industry related experience.
  • 1 year experience in the nucleoside and nucleotide chemistry.
  • 1 year teaching experience in the Pharmaceutical Medicinal Chemistry and Pharm D courses.
  • 1 year experience with all phases of drug discovery and specialized in the organic synthesis and synthetic route development of target molecules.




Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • A track record of significant scientific contributions with publications in peer-reviewed journals and protection of intellectual property.
  • Outstanding communication skills; ability to develop, implement and clearly communicate drug discovery strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfortable working in a rapidly changing environment.

Synthesizing and characterizing compounds required for biological studies. Measuring the photochemical properties of compounds used for biological studies. Assisting with biological studies. Communicating regularly and in a timely fashion with the PI regarding research and other issues relevant to the operation of the laboratory. Assisting with the daily operations of the laboratory. Assisting with the supervision of the other members of the laboratory. Other duties as assigned Percentage Of Time 76 Duties/Responsibilities
Developing lectures for Medicinal Chemistry based courses. Delivering lectures in Medicinal Chemistry-based courses. Assisting with delivery of laboratory-based courses in B.S. Program. Working with PBS faculty, including course coordinators, to design and implement novel curriculum in medicinal chemistry. Proctoring quizzes, exams and other assessments. Grading exams, quizzes and other assessments and the timely reporting of grades to course coordinators. Training and coordinating Teaching Assistants.
