Job Description

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Arizona campus is hiring a Accessibility Specialist to support the Disability Support Services Team. The university is a small, private, residential university in the mountains of Arizona with approximately 3,500 students. Staff/faculty/student interaction is highly valued and is a central theme of our campus. It is located 100 miles north of Phoenix and 120 miles south of the Grand Canyon.

The Accessibility Specialist reports to and provides support for the Director of Disability Support Services (DSS). The specialist is responsible for managing the daily tasks associated with maintaining the DSS department and providing accommodations. This responsibility includes frequent communication with students and parents and with staff in other departments, including scheduling intake and follow-up meetings. It also includes receiving, organizing, and securing any medical documentation sent by students seeking accommodations. The specialist will review each student’s DSS application and all submitted documentation for completeness based on department guidelines. The specialist will assist students with acquiring and using assistive/adaptive technologies and services, including training, and will manage the loaning of any technology owned by the department. The specialist will troubleshoot problems students encounter using technology and receiving accommodations, including going to the classroom when necessary. The specialist will proctor or supervise proctoring for any test taking occurring in the department and will work collaboratively with the testing center coordinator for disabled students using the center. Will assist with all aspects of providing accommodations to disabled students as needed, and may assist with reviewing student requests for accommodations at the discretion of the director. Will participate in any campus events involving DSS, as required.

The specialist will also conduct regular communications with other university departments as needed to maintain the office and to assure that it functions effectively, which will include creating and following up on work orders. The specialist will keep a record of all contracts for external disability services and notify the director when they are due for renewal. The position also includes responsibility for creating and maintaining records at the request of the director. The specialist is expected to maintain current knowledge of general office procedure and the assistive/adaptive technology provided to students through the department. Must be able to observe strict policies of confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and work to ensure the privacy of students obtaining services through the department. Will also assist with receptionist duties as needed and maintain a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all students, parents, staff, and faculty who contact or visit the department. Will demonstrate a willingness to assist all visitors with their needs. Must also be flexible and willing to adapt the priorities set by the director.

Job Duties:

  • Supports the director in carrying out her duties and maintaining her calendar, including scheduling intake and any follow-up meetings between the director and students and/or parents. Assists the director in communicating with professors and university administrators, as needed.

  • Performs administrative tasks such as general office duties, including purchasing supplies. Creates and maintains records, reports, and spreadsheets. Takes meeting minutes if needed. Assists the director in maintaining the department website.

  • Pursues and maintains professional development in office procedures and any DSS practices designated by the director.

  • Assists the director in performing additional duties related to maintaining contact with registered students and providing information to prospective students. Assists the director in promoting the departments presence on campus.

Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or completion of program of 18+ months after high school. Area of study: Business and/or office management.

  • Required skills, knowledge, abilities: Analytical skills with an in-depth knowledge of information systems and technical expertise with Microsoft operating systems, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook/email, and Internet end-user applications.

  • One to three years of work related experience.
