Facilities Maintenance Mechanic
The Facility Maintenance Mechanic works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Utilities Ops Supervisor. The incumbent works as a skilled generalist and performs at a journey-level in one trade with strong skills in other trades to perform a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction and renovation work on facilities and systems, particularly in mechanical facilities equipment and systems including HVAC and plumbing systems, to ensure a clean, safe and attractive learning environment. The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance system to ensure the preventive maintenance program objectives are met. The incumbent provides safety instructions and directions to unskilled or semi-skilled assistants.
The Central Plant unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides services to a University campus spread across nine sites comprised of +150 acres, 81 buildings, and more than seven million gross square feet. Maintenance & Operations employs approximately 250 full-time permanent staff and up to an additional nine part-time, seasonal, or contract staff. In FY20-21, the assigned operating budget for the unit is $49 million not including funds associated with purchased utilities or maintenance and repair projects.
- Performs at a journey level in at least one trade and assists with basic and advanced level maintenance and minor repair work for various trades including HVAC/Controls, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and lock.
- Performs various types of preventive maintenance and routine maintenance work to include: motors, pumps, fans, controls, duct work, drains, meter readings, condensate sampling, filters repairs, and general cleaning. Identifies problems and needed repairs.
- Inspects various types of equipment, systems, and areas to identify problems and needed repairs.
- Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
- Read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches; and estimate cost, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work.
- Operates state vehicle and equipment to include; utility cart, scissor lift, boom lift and forklift (as certified) to be used for maintenance, delivery of supplies, tools and equipment to job site.
- Attends and participates in departmental meetings, training sessions and functions.
- The incumbent maintains records and retrieves data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems. Prepares standard reports, to include as-built for database update. Keeps time records to assist in completion of documentation.
- Provides response to Service Desk to responds to facility services related emergency situations around campus and miscellaneous trouble calls as assigned (during both normal and after hours).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment and tools used in one skilled trade area.
- Working knowledge of materials, methods, equipment and tools in related trade areas pertaining to facilities, systems, construction and renovation.
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted trade practices in trade specialty.
- Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems.
- Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems and renovations.
- Ability to demonstrate journey-level skill in one trade and strong skills in other applicable trades.
- Ability to operate construction and related equipment; use considerable judgment and discretion in performing duties
- Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches; and estimate cost, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work.
- Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems and to prepare standard reports.
- Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
- Ability to analyze and respond to emergency situations.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses and pass the course exam.
- Ability to accommodate a work schedule that varies according to operational needs and may include evening and weekend hours
- Knowledge, skills, and ability to assess, formulate, and evaluate the impact of recommended or implemented policies from a strategic and operational perspective.

Must possess those abilities normally would be acquired through four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in a mechanical or facilities/building trade, or any equivalent combination of training and experience as a facilities and systems mechanic which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program.

Salary Range: $5,402/month - $6,904/month
