Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design’s (RISD) Office of Intercultural Student Engagement (ISE) seeks an Assistant Director of Diversity Programs to serve as a community liaison to promote the services and programs of ISE that support strategic priorities and that enhance recruitment initiatives, orientation programs and advisement for affinity groups.

The ISE cultivates an environment that recognizes an ever-changing campus and global community. This office supports historically excluded groups including but not limited to First Generation, International, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Polyamorous, Religious, Social Economic Status, Spiritual, Students with differing physical and psychological abilities, Students of Color, and those of all ages. Students who interact with the ISE typically go on to serve in campus leadership roles in Resident Life and other critical areas.

The Assistant Director is a self-starter who recognizes gaps and proactively seeks opportunities to work cross-departmentally. The successful candidate is deeply committed to and energized by connecting with art + design students and the greater RISD community and has exceptional interpersonal skills with an open and welcoming attitude. This position leads with authenticity, centering the students’ developmental needs and interests by developing and delivering programs, services, and systems that support their social, cultural, and academic success. As well, the Assistant Director of Diversity Programs makes recommendations to the Director of ISE on the alignment of ISE programs and opportunities with those of campus stakeholders to advance the recruitment, retention, and completion of non-majority student populations.

We seek a culturally competent candidate whose professional practice is aligned with advancing the principles of social equity and inclusion, environmental and climate justice, and equal access to resources and opportunities.

Essential Functions

Cultural Advising

  • Offer advisement based on social identity development, oppression, privilege, and liberation theory and practice to populations representing marginalized students, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA+, race/ethnicity, national origin, religion/spirituality.

  • Provide leadership and advocacy toward outcomes that benefit, welcome, and support for students of marginalized identities.


  • Produce ISE’s signature programs including but not limited to BBQueer, heritage months, Drag show and actively engage other departments and areas in order to maximize outreach and institutional involvement.

  • Plan and organize collective gatherings to explore issues of identity, culture, campus climate for students, and program collaborations.

  • Train, supervise, and mentor the Cultural Programmers.

  • Coordinate, monitor, and oversee the use of and logistics for the Pride Room and Reflection Rooms. Serve as a resource for affinity student organizations on programming and advocacy services, working closely with the Center for Student Involvement.

Cultural Partnerships

  • Serve as the ISE community liaison to cross-campus stakeholders in order to create and align opportunities that deepen the awareness and ensure the inclusion of non-majority populations. Engage RISD Admissions and the divisions of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs in mutually beneficial diversity and inclusion outcomes related to recruitment, orientation, and campus experience. These outcomes will include, but may not be limited to outreach visitations to diverse high schools, ISE hosting campus visits for diverse students, and designing orientation programs that welcome and engage intercultural students with RISD.

  • Represent ISE and promote ISE services and programs to external partners that promote the successful integration and cultural transition of minoritized student populations into RISD and Providence.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience with a focus in either multicultural or social justice education or education and experience related to working with nonprofit and community organizations that focus on identity, culture, and inclusion.

  • Minimum of three years in student advising and working with a wide spectrum of students that represent the intersectionality of social identities.

  • Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity apropos to the intersections of ability, class, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religion/spirituality, and sexual orientation.

  • A demonstrated knowledge of historical and contemporary multiculturalism with an American context.

  • Ability to foster and build relationships with internal and external partners in order to achieve common goals required. Experience working with Admissions on recruitment initiatives and outreach in higher education highly desired.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage in personal development practices around social identities, oppression, privilege, liberation, and ally-ship.

  • Knowledge of social identity theories for minoritized students and the ability to incorporate those paradigms in student development practices, services, and program development.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in working as a team member and collaborator among a variety of constituents including faculty, staff, student affairs practitioners, community leaders.

  • Ability to handle and address sensitive, personal situations with confidentiality, decorum, and protocol.

  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and cultural competency.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong computer skills, i.e. MS Office (Excel, Word, Gmail and Google Docs).

  • Ability to mentor and guide students.

  • An appreciation for art and design, developed through education, employment, or personal interest is highly desirable.



Work Schedule:

35 hours per week; 12 months per year

Some evenings and weekends required throughout the year.
