POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Corporation Controller, the Accounting Manager manages the day to day accounting operations of the Corporation, supervises staff that perform accounting transactions, and reconciliations, manages special projects, provides operational support to the Corporation team and serves as one of the Corporation's subject matter experts on auxiliary accounting and financial reporting matters.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Direct, manage, train, and supervise the Corporation staff for accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, purchasing cards, travel, general ledger, asset management, endowment support, banking reconciliation and related financial operations.
- Assure the proper recording and documentation of financial transactions, including allowability, deposits, A/P batches, periodic accruals and general ledger activity.
- Identify actual or potential problems and recommends corrective action or preventative action. Provides consultative services to campus administrators in resolving accounting problems.
- Interpret and implement new and existing federal and state regulations and university requirements. Computes and estimates the effects of proposed changes on operating programs or accounting operations and recommends improvements in accounting systems and procedures.
- Revise existing and develop new procedure and process improvements and implement to create efficiencies. Ensure procedures and training are being implemented and communicated.
- Respond to inquiries and requests from campus departments and auxiliaries and provides analytical support when needed. Instruct department managers and other system users on navigating the accounting software.
- Examine documents for conformance to established policies and procedures, GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) and GASB (Government Accounting Standards Board).
- Coordinate monthly, quarterly and year-end close and recording of accruals/deferrals and review documents for completeness, accuracy and proper accounting period.
- Oversee the financial and related compliance requirements,
including, but not limited to, 1099s, 1042s, sales and use tax, CA
non-resident withholding, and foreign withholding,
- Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the accounting department.
- Assist in other areas of Corporation accounting and finance as needed.
- Assist or prepare, analyze and interpret monthly, quarterly and ad hoc reports as needed.
- Perform other duties or special assignments as required.
PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT: Please note CSUMB and The Corporation are working remotely until at least July 2021; however, there are components of this job which are deemed essential on campus to supervise the Accounting staff. This position will report to the Ryan Ranch office, located off-campus, on a full-time or hybrid basis. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires working on campus with students, staff and faculty. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong leadership, decision making and management skills and experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and GASB and practices involving governmental and non-profit organizations.
- Strong working knowledge of internal control standards and application, and governmental and/or non-profit accounting methods and related laws, rules and regulations.
- Demonstrable experience in assessing and developing procedures and processes.
- Ability to understand, apply and analyze data and documents for GAAP, GASB, office methods and procedures, applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and statistical and arithmetic presentation of data.
- Advanced technical skills with accounting enterprise systems, reporting, complex spreadsheets, databases, query tools, pivot tables and use of MS Office products.
- Strong problem-solving techniques for finding solutions and strong analytical abilities to apply accounting principles to complex accounting problems.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong ability to change priorities when needed and meet changing and overlapping deadlines, along with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Be a self-starter, able to work independently in a multi-task oriented environment, and professionally and diplomatically serve diverse constituents with equity, fairness and tact
Education and experience:
- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with a major in finance, accounting, business administration, economics, public administration, or a closely related field AND five (5) years of progressively responsible professional accounting and/or finance experience preferably in a non-profit, education or governmental organizations;
- A combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Equivalent to a graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience. • Successful experience supervising and leading accounting operations.
- Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements identified above are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required.
- Duties may require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations. Must have own transportation, valid driver’s license, auto insurance, complete the Defensive Driving training and participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
- Experience in a college or university, nonprofit or governmental environment.
- Experience utilizing the California State University version of PeopleSoft administrative systems (finance, student, human capital management) and a variety of connected and stand-alone systems or similar accounting and reporting systems.
- Experience with reporting systems such as Tableau, Crystal, Banner, MSAccess, or Revenuevision.
- Experience in working with professional development and training of staff.

Compensation and Benefits:
The University Corporation is committed to providing our employees with a comprehensive program that rewards efforts that are appreciated by your colleagues, students, and the customers we serve. The annual range for this position is $90,000 - $102,000, commensurable with experience. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits.
