Department Summary
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the University of Oregon. The broad responsibilities of this 15-member group are to supervise, coordinate, manage, and regulate the UO, as provided by state statute. The trustees may exercise all powers, rights, duties, and privileges expressly granted by law or that are incidental to their responsibilities.

Position Summary
The University Secretary (“Secretary”) is a senior administrative position and an officer of the University. The Secretary is responsible for high-level and confidential facilitation and coordination of the activities of the Board of Trustees of the University of Oregon (“Board”), including strategic planning, meeting preparation, staffing, and managing relationships between the Board and university administrators. The Secretary ensures compliance with public meetings laws, attends all meetings of the Board and its committees, makes and retains custody of the records of the proceedings of the Board and its committees, and provides for the general management and coordination of Board activities. The Secretary is the custodian of university policies enacted by the Board or the President of the University (“President”).

The Secretary also serves as a senior advisor and administrative staff member to the President, managing projects and initiatives, providing strategic counsel, and representing the President as directed by the President.

The Secretary reports administratively to the President of the University and functionally to both the Chair of the Board of Trustees (“Chair”) and the President.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five years of experience working directly with a board of directors, chief executive officer, or equivalent in a professional or executive setting

    Professional Competencies
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple competing and changing priorities, requests, tasks, and deadlines
  • Proven ability to manage demands and stresses of a high-profile organization
  • Highly effective and professional verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent writing skills, including proofreading and editing proficiency as well as minute keeping
  • Strong computer literacy, including with the Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Proven experience maintaining a high level of confidentiality and professional conduct
  • Experience with meeting preparation

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in a relevant field
  • Knowledge of and experience with senior-level administrative operations at a college, university, or university system
