    Department Summary
    The University of Oregon Intercollegiate Athletic Department's primary purpose is to provide a unique opportunity for student-athletes to be developed, tested, and encouraged to reach their maximum potential in every aspect of their lives.     Position Summary
    The Grounds/Maintenance Worker is responsible for developing and recommending a strategy related to the care and maintenance of landscaping and athletic field issues. This position will also provide some event support.

    Typical tasks include the following: mows and edges lawns and fields with use of push and riding lawnmowers, tractors, and power edgers; plants, transplants, fertilizes, and waters lawns, shrubs, bedding plants, ground cover, and trees with tools such as hoes, trowels, and shovels; cuts, trims, and prunes trees, shrubs, bedding plants, and ground cover with use of hand or power tools; eradicates weeds using both manual and mechanical methods such as: pulling, tilling, or using line trimmers; prevents weeds by mulching; calibrates, mixes and applies pesticides and herbicides according to manufacturer's instructions; installs irrigation and sprinkler systems by digging trenches by hand or with a tractor, lays and connects pipes, valves, sprinklers and controls, fills in trenches, and flattens or grades roads with bulldozer or road grader.

    Additional expectations of position:
  • Valid Oregon Driver's license and safe driving record
  • Ability to work on ladders
  • Ability to perform all motions required for most landscape maintenance and construction activities
  • Able to work large-scale events in excess of 60,000 people
  • Ability to obtain UO forklift certificate within three months of employment

    Minimum Requirements
  • Pesticide applicator's license may be required based on position duties; AND
  • Two years experience as a grounds keeper which included plant care; OR
  • An Associate's degree in Landscape Technology or Horticulture; OR
  • Completion of a Landscape Certification program or license in a horticultural specialty

    Professional Competencies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of plants, landscape irrigation, soil chemistry and structure, and familiarity with operation of landscape maintenance, construction, and related safety equipment as it pertains to Athletic D1 competition
  • Working knowledge of basic computer management programs
  • Ability to work with diverse population

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Game day experience working with multiple sports fields and related sports events
  • Demonstrated welding experience
  • Large NCAA event support for PAC 12 schools or equivalent school size
