The University of Oregon Alumni Association (UOAA) fosters lifelong relationships, deepens engagement, and advocates on behalf of the university and Duck alumni around the world. Launched in 1879, the UOAA is proud of its long history of keeping alumni connected to the university and to one another, offering a wide array of opportunities for service and engagement. With a membership of over 27,000, the UOAA serves as an important connection to the university for more than 250,000 alumni worldwide. The Associate Director of Membership and Business Development is a vital member of the UOAA team. They are responsible for the acquisition, renewal, and retention of 1) dues-paying members and 2) business partners with annual targeted revenue over $750,000. The work of the UOAA is funded almost entirely by membership dues and business partner income. Membership invites alumni and friends to become active in the life of the Duck community, from being informed about the UO to showing up for one another, in concept and in practice. Membership acquisition campaigns include direct mail and electronic solicitations. Renewal and retention strategies include membership upgrade promotions, spotlight on member benefits, and lapsed membership follow-up appeals. Business partners enhance the work of the UOAA through their financial support and their products and services that can be used by our community members. Major business partners include credit card and insurance partners.
The Associate Director works directly with third-party vendors and supervises a student assistant to fulfill memberships and member premiums. They work to ensure the smooth onboarding of new members while providing them value based upon affiliation, access, and benefits. They also provide individual stewardship and customer service to existing UOAA members in person, over the phone, and via electronic communications.
The Associate Director presents information on membership and business partner data to leadership and board members, ensuring accuracy and timely sharing of membership counts and monies raised, to demonstrate progress towards goals. They work closely with the UO Foundation's team of database administrators and financial records specialists. They will also train UOAA staff, interact frequently with UO alumni and UOAA members, and coordinate solicitations with the Annual Philanthropy team.
This position requires the ability to work some evenings and weekends, and travel on a periodic basis.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of skills and
- Four years of development or marketing experience in
membership, annual giving, alumni relations, development, business
development, or related experience
- Strong verbal and written communications skills; demonstrated
ability to write clear business prose and compelling, persuasive
- Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to work effectively
with others and collaborate with both internal and external
constituents, including third party vendors
- Ability to work independently within a dynamic team
environment; ability to work with diplomacy and efficiency in a
- Demonstrated organizational skills, from developing strategy
and managing projects to achieving goals; demonstrated
problem-solving ability with high attention to detail
- Ability to compile, analyze, and utilize data and research to
develop a communication or marketing plan to support a goal,
objective, or call to action
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and database
- Ability to handle confidential information with excellent
judgment and discretion
- Ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively with
individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, recognizing and
respecting the many and varied identities of each person
