The Prevention Science Institute (PSI) at the University of Oregon (UO) is a multidisciplinary research institute focused on improving the lives of children, families, and adults through science, outreach, and program delivery. The PSI includes faculty from across the UO who work together to understand prevention and health promotion through translational science and applied intervention research.
We conduct research from multiple perspectives, including translational research that focuses on interactions between the brain, social context, and behavior; developing, testing, and delivering effective intervention programs; and efficacious ways to disseminate programs into community, agency, and school settings.
The Data Science Specialist works with PSI scientists on various federal grants and sponsored projects, including a large-scale, multi-site center grant (P50) ) and the RADx-UP grant to scale-up COVID-19 testing to the Latinx community.
The incumbent interfaces with and provides support across projects to facilitate data harmonization of projects involving multiple sources of data and means of data collection (observation, biospecimen, imaging, Qualtrics, REDCap, etc.). This person develops shared program syntax for projects and pilots to facilitate data harmonization and organizes harmonized data for repository archiving. The incumbent writes and maintains meta-data documentation for the shared data repository following guidelines in data sharing protocols. They coordinate with the P50 Data Science Core to assess and implement data science priorities. They also coordinate with the RADx-UP data science consortium.
Support for other projects includes acting as a resource to personnel accessing data; coordinating with methodologists; running routine descriptive analysis; cleaning, formatting, and preparing files for datasets; and conducting light analysis, such as descriptive analysis and frequencies.
Although remote work is possible at the start of this position, the ideal candidate would eventually be able to work on-site.
- BA/BS degree with coursework appropriate to the position; an
equivalent combination of relevant training and experience may be
considered in exceptional circumstances.
- Five years of research experience, or progressively responsible
employment in a field applicable to the research, or a combination
of such training and experience. Experience must include performing
data management duties in a research environment, and direct
experience with the following:
o longitudinal data
o large datasets
o multiple-method and multi-sources of person-level and group-level data
- Advanced training in multiple statistical software packages,
such as R, Python, Excel, SPSS, SAS, and Stata.
- Knowledge of spoken and written English sufficient to obtain,
provide, or exchange information. This position requires excellent
interpersonal skills and service-oriented attitude.
- A highly efficient and organized approach to work and strong
attention to detail and thoroughness. Applicant must also possess
exceptional time management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, requiring
participatory decision-making and cooperative interactions among

- Strong working knowledge of personal computers with formal
training and/or employment experience.
- Familiarity with IRB protocols and/or procedures sufficient to
manage multiple levels of data structures and maintain
confidentiality of data, as required.
- Master's degree
- Experience in Qualtrics or REDcap, relational databases, and
Python or Perl.
- Graduate Degree in relevant discipline.
- Prior experience working with federal collaborative data
centers and consortia
