Research Engineer II/III- Radio Frequency Engineer

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University is seeking a highly motivated Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer to join a rapidly growing environment for cutting edge R&D related to unmanned and autonomous systems at our Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA (ICBM). The ICBM is home to one-of-a-kind research and test facilities for conducting activities related to drone, unmanned, and autonomous system technologies. It consists of a state-of-the-art collaboration center as well as indoor and outdoor test ranges for testing aerial and ground systems as well as other devices such as antennas, sensors, and communications equipment. The lab is designed to be flexible and configurable to support current and future R&D activities related to autonomous systems in order to advance the state of the research and solve real world problems.

The RF Engineer will provide domain subject matter expertise across all projects at the Expeditionary Cyber and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (ECUAS) Lab and will work within a truly unique lab environment with massive one-of-a-kind anechoic chamber. Duties will include design and test of RF-based prototype systems using software defined radios, waveform generators, and specialized test equipment such as high powered amplifiers and high speed RF data capture devices. The RF engineer will work collaboratively with other multi-disciplinary teams that are creating solutions for RF machine learning, waveform generation, EM coupling, antenna characterization, Electro-Magnetic Pulse/Electro-Magnetic Interference, and RF modeling and simulation. The focus of all work is centered on Unmanned Aircraft Systems and related technologies such as sensors and communications.

Responsibilities:
  • Radio Frequency and Electromagnetic R&D activities, including prototype modeling & simulation, design, fabrication and experimentation.
  • Test and validation of RF/EM devices using advanced test equipment in RF anechoic chamber, including antenna pattern measurements, EM field coupling measurements, EMI/EMC measurements, and RF waveform design/optimization.
  • Provide RF/EM subject matter expertise across a diverse team of scientists and engineers for contributing to proposals, publications, white-papers, etc.

Qualifications:
Education
  • BS in Electrical Engineering and 8+ years' experience, or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering and 5+ years' experience.

Skills/Attributes
  • Experience with RF/microwave and Electromagnetic (EM) systems and applications (for example Radar, Comms, GNSS or EW)
  • Experience operating RF/EM test and measurement equipment such as vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, antenna positioners, and high power amplifiers
  • Experience with antenna, radio frequency and electromagnetic design
  • Experience with antenna, radio frequency and electromagnetic software tools, and modeling & simulation (HFSS, Matlab, etc.)
  • Experience with anechoic chamber testing, including antenna pattern measurements
  • Experience with software defined radios, waveforms, digital communications and signal processing
  • Experience or Knowledge of drones or other remote control systems
  • Experience with publication of work with strong writing and presentation skills
  • Experience with hands on prototyping, experimentation and evaluation
  • Experience writing proposals for funded research projects
  • Experience with or knowledge of EMI/EMC validation
  • Ability and desire to lead projects from concept to creation
  • A passion to learn and constantly expand knowledge-base
  • Eligibility to obtain National Security Clearance
  • Preferred: Active DoD Secret Clearance or above with ability to obtain Special Access clearance

Preferred Qualifications:
