The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) at the
UW-Madison seeks a self-motivated, collaborative, innovative, and
service-oriented leader for the position of Human Resources Unit
Head (HR Specialist). Under the general direction of the WNPRC
Associate Director of Operational Services, this unit leader
designs, implements, and monitors more than one HR functional
program for the WNPRC, including payroll and benefits; recruitment,
classification, and compensation; employee life cycle management
(onboarding, performance management, etc.); and employee relations.
The HR Unit Head leads a team of two HR staff: an HR Business
Partner and an HR Coordinator. This position assists in strategy
development to ensure the HR Unit is able to process and support
workforce needs, to ensure regulatory compliance, and to support
the greater WNPRC goals and mission.
The WNPRC is one of seven federally supported National Primate
Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. The WNPRC's
mission is to increase our understanding of basic primate biology
and to improve human and animal health and quality of life through
research. Since its establishment in 1961, thousands of scientists
have conducted research in primate biology with relevance to human
and animal health through the WNPRC. Based in the Office of the
Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE), the
WNPRC has strong, long-established research and teaching links to
UW-Madison Schools and Colleges including Medicine and Public
Health (SMPH), Letters and Science (L&S), Agriculture and Life
Sciences (CALS), and Veterinary Medicine (SVM).
The Primate Center has approximately 200 employees, including
academic staff, university staff, graduate students, undergraduate
students, and employees-in-training. Additionally, WNPRC affiliated
faculty initiate a variety of appointments through the Primate
Center, as well as their home departments. Therefore, the HR Unit
Head must be able to interact with a number of different schools,
centers, and departments on the UW-Madison campus, and will have
extensive contact with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for
Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE) HR Office.
Under the general direction of the WNPRC Associate Director of
Operational Services, the HR Unit Head performs a wide variety of
complex human resources activities as noted in the list of

Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or Business Administration
Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
Well-qualified applicants will have the following experience:
* At least five years of professional experience working in human
resources, preferably within an academic environment (seven years
of experience required for appointment at the senior-level).
* Demonstrated commitment to courteous and responsive customer
service with the ability to lead an HR team dedicated to
exceptional customer service.
* Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion,
as well as the ability to maintain confidentiality.
* Knowledge of HR management methods and techniques, as well as the
principles of management and supervision required.
* Demonstrated ability to solve a wide array of complex,
multi-disciplinary problems while considering immediate and

techniques to respond to inquiries thoroughly and accurately while
maintaining professionalism, tact, confidentiality, and
