Digitization Technician

The Digitization Services Unit of the Sheridan Libraries has the primary mission of digitizing the Libraries’ books, manuscripts, photographs and other materials for the research and teaching needs of Johns Hopkins University scholars. The unit is supervised by the Manager of Digital Collections as Data and follows the guidance of the Collection Management Council and the Digital Initiatives Oversight Board for determining the priority for digitizing collections. The capture and processing of images follows an archival workflow for ensuring the best and most authentic rendering of all materials into digital form and follows all digital policies approved by the Digital Initiatives Oversight Board.

We are seeking aDigitization Technician (Library Assistant) who will prepare material for digital imaging, digitize material according to appropriate standards, perform quality assurance checks on digitized material and provide daily production statistics to the Digitization Specialist. In addition to those duties this role works one day per week at the George Peabody Library working with the Curator to manage materials workflows including pulling and wrapping books for transport, shifting and re-shelving books, exhibition assistance, scanning, and other duties as assigned. This role reports to the Manager of Digital Collections as Data.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Prepare material for digital imaging Digitize material using a variety of equipment including a Phase One camera Process digital images according to the Sheridan Libraries’ standards using a variety of software including Adobe Photoshop, Capture One CH, Epson Scan, etc. Provide daily quality assurance checks on digitized images to ensure standard compliance parameters are met Provide daily production statistics to the Digitization Specialist One day a week work at the George Peabody Library assisting the Curator with a variety of jobs including pulling books, wrapping books, shifting books, re-shelving books, scanning material, exhibition prep, and other duties
  • Participates in special projects or other initiatives and other activities related to the Department as appropriate
  • Engages in professional development as appropriate

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    High School Diploma or GED One year related experience Additional education can be substituted for experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years’ experience with digital photography, digital image processing, training, and working in a technical production environment Experience with scanning/photography
  • Library and/or archives experience
  • Experience with Adobe creative suite (Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, etc.)

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    Ability to work both collaboratively and independently General proficiency with computers Attention to detail Ability to learn new image capture and processing applications quickly Ability to handle library special collections material carefully Ability to lift 30-35 pounds Ability to stand in place for up to two hours at a time Ability to work in a historic space with open stacks that are six stories high

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
