Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The University of North Carolina Wilmington ( UNCW ) is one of the 17 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina ( UNC ). The Division of Academic Affairs is the organizational unit at UNCW that houses the academic and administrative units charged with evolving, advancing, and operationalizing the core academic mission of the institution. Academic Affairs achieves this charge through a commitment to the principle of shared governance and collaboration with the other organizational divisions of UNCW : the Division of Business Affairs, the Division of Student Affairs, the Chancellor’s Division, and University Advancement. Academic Affairs is the primary division responsible for delivering the teaching, research and service mission. Through academic policies and practices consistent with sound research, theory and methods, Academic Affairs provides a wide array of scholarly programs and leadership that embody excellence in teaching, learning, scholarship, and creative work, as well as service to local, regional and global communities consistent with the institution’s strategic objectives. As of July 2021, the division is comprised of four colleges, three major centers, and eight functional areas that provide support to faculty, staff and students. Academic Affairs represents approximately 75% of the university budget and about 60% of the university workforce.

The Office of the Provost is the central administrative office responsible for the coordination and leadership of the division of Academic Affairs. The Office of the Provost is directly comprised of the administrative support team, the resource administration team, the personnel administration team, and the communications team. The eight functional areas within the division are extensions of the Office of the Provost but function with a higher degree of autonomy than those units housed directly in the office.
