Position Purpose: The Director of Human Resources collaborates with the VP for Finance to support the core educational mission of the university by providing a high level of service to university community employees. The primary responsibilities of the position include the direction, planning, coordination and management of Human Resources functions for the staff, faculty, adjunct faculty, and student employees of Aurora University, which includes its main campus in Aurora, IL, its campus in Williams Bay, WI, and its center in Woodstock, IL. The incumbent must demonstrate a successful track-record of managing personnel and policy initiatives including but not limited to hiring, on-boarding, compliance, compensation, retirement, benefits, employee relations, student employment, performance management, training and development, faculty governance and contracts, etc. Additionally, the Director of Human Resources will manage a team of three direct reports and needs to show the ability to manage the day to day functions of the department as well as execute university initiatives.

  • Essential Job Functions:

  • Monitors and ensures organization compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and recommends policy and practice modifications, as needed, to maintain compliance.
  • Complete timely and accurate filing of all personnel related reports required by federal, state, and local agencies as well as accreditors and other third-party compliance.
  • Develops and executes best practices for hiring and talent management that aligns with the overall objectives of the institution and consistent with the university’s culture.
  • Facilitate and support performance management and professional development programs.
  • Manage new employee on-boarding efforts to ensure a candidate’s successful transition to contributing employee.
  • Oversee all university benefit programs including the university retirement plan, health and welfare plans, worker’s compensation, leave plans, tuition remission and other benefits.
  • Develop strong working relationships at all levels of the university and consults with senior leaders to ensure consistent and fair resolution of employee issues / concerns.
  • Coordinates and oversees the process for requesting employee accommodations.
  • Oversee the accuracy of employment data for reporting and compliance purposes.
  • Works as a close partner with the VP for Finance on strategic matters as they arise.


  • Essential Job Requirements:

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Professional HR certification desired.


    Experience:

    • At least 8 years of generalist human resources experience.
    • Prior experience working in higher education preferred.
    • Extensive knowledge and experience executing HR practices, policies, and procedures.
    • Experience managing HR professionals.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
    • Strategic mindset and orientation with the ability to solve problems.
    • Track record of managing changing needs, multiple projects, and fluid priorities simultaneously.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
