ATTENTION:

The Department of Special Education at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks a Early Childhood Education (ECE) Lecturer (Lecturer).

This will be a fixed term appointment and reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon needs of the position, grant funding and external forces.

JOB DETAILS:

The person in this position will teach courses and supervise students in UW-Whitewater’s campus-based Early Childhood Education (ECE) undergraduate degree program during the 2021-2022 academic year. This is a full time 1-year limited term appointment funded through a grant. The position may be renewed for one additional year, if grant funding is renewed.

Students in the ECE program earn dual licensure in early childhood education and early childhood special education and are prepared to teach all children ages 0-8. Students are admitted annually in cohorts of 30 students. Courses taught by the instructor may include both regular and special education content depending on program needs and the expertise of the person hired for the position. Courses will be taught primarily in a face-to-face format with some courses taught in a hybrid format.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in early childhood education, early childhood special education or a related field
  • Three years of experience teaching children ages 0-8
  • Ability to get to and from community schools and agencies to supervise students who may be placed within a 50-mile radius of the UWW campus
Desired Characteristics:
  • Experience teaching early childhood or early childhood special education courses at the college level
  • Experience supervising students in practicum or student teaching placements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
RESPONSIBILITIES:

75% A. Teach courses in the ECE program
  1. Teach multiple courses each semester.
  2. Modify or update syllabi for each course prior to the start of each semester.
  3. Develop an online platform for each course using Canvas and use Canvas throughout the semester to post course content, enter student grades, and communicate with students.
  4. Communicate with textbook rental about textbook needs for students.
  5. Deliver instruction weekly during scheduled course times.
  6. Grade student assignments providing meaningful feedback to encourage student growth.
  7. Hold regular office hours on campus each week.
  8. Respond to student questions via email within 24 hours whenever possible.
  9. Enter final grades into the online grading platform at end of semester.
  10. Communicate any concerns about student progress to the ECE team.
20% B. Supervise students in practicum and student teaching placements
  1. Observe students teaching in early childhood programs and schools (in person and virtual).
  2. Provide written feedback to students regarding their emerging skills in planning, teaching and assessing student learning.
  3. Communicate regularly with cooperating teachers.
  4. Ensure cooperating teachers complete mid and end of semester evaluations.
  5. Complete student evaluations at middle and end of semester.
  6. Provide written feedback on weekly reflections.
  7. Provide feedback and complete rubrics for student assignments.
  8. Submit end of semester grades for students into online grading platform.
  9. Communicate any issues encountered in supervision to the ECE program coordinator.
  10. Attend required trainings for supervisors.

5% C. Collaborate with ECE team and other university colleagues
  1. Actively participate in weekly ECE program meetings.
  2. Collaborate with the ECE team to complete program related tasks as requested.
  3. Attend other college and university meetings and trainings as required.
