Position Summary:

At the University of Puget Sound there are currently two Full Time Athletic Trainer positions (one 11-month and one 12-month) that work with the Full Time (12-month, 1.0 FTE) Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer to provide medical services for over 475 student-athletes on 23 intercollegiate athletic teams. The Athletic Training Staff is responsible for providing comprehensive sports medicine services under the direction of designated Team Physicians. These services include the daily operation of the Sports Medicine Facility, daily practice and competition medical coverage for traditional seasons and either on-site presence or on-call availability for non-traditional seasons of the intercollegiate athletic teams. The Athletic Training Staff is also utilized by student-athletes in their off season for various medical conditions and injuries that may affect their ability to perform off season workouts, injury rehabilitation, or their preparation for the upcoming competitive season. The Athletic Training Staff is responsible for maintaining medical standards consistent with the best practices set forth by the NCAA Sports Medicine and Safeguards Committee and the National Athletic Trainers' Association.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Injury/illness prevention and wellness protection - Educating student-athletes and coaches and managing risk for safe performance and function.
  • Clinical evaluation and diagnosis of injury - Implementing standard evaluation techniques and formulating a clinical impression for the determination of a course of action.
  • Immediate and emergency injury care - Employing standard care procedures and communicating outcomes for efficient and appropriate care of the injured student-athlete.
  • Injury treatment and rehabilitation - Treatment and rehabilitation plans developed in conjunction with the Team Physician or attending physician.
  • Organizational and professional health and well-being - Understanding and adhering to approved institutional and professional practices and guidelines to ensure individual and organizational well-being.
  • Inspecting the Sports Medicine Facility to ensure that all equipment is in safe working order.
  • Manage all aspects of injury care for student-athletes that come into the facility throughout the day.
  • Timely and thorough medical documentation of injury/illness notes sustained by student-athletes.
  • Appropriate filing of intercollegiate secondary insurance claims as necessary.
  • Supervision of intercollegiate team practices either at the specific venue or on-call in the Sports Medicine Facility based on the risk associated with the particular sport practicing as determined by the Athletic Training Staff on site during the specific time of the practice.
  • On site medical coverage of all home intercollegiate competitions or on-call supervision if there are more events than the Full Time and Part Time Athletic Training Staff can manage.
  • The Athletic Training Staff is responsible for implementing the appropriate Emergency Action Plan (EAP) specific to the medical condition/emergency and venue at the time of the incident.
  • The Athletic Trainer will also be responsible for some travel with sports teams to away competitions if there is adequate staff to cover all of the medical coverage responsibilities at Puget Sound.
  • The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for occasional travel with other intercollegiate teams to Northwest Conference and NCAA Championship events throughout the year.
  • The Athletic Trainer is responsible for coordinating appointments for student-athletes with Team Physicians including on campus clinic visits and visits to off campus provider offices.
  • The Athletic Trainer will accompany student-athletes to scheduled visits with physicians whenever possible.
  • The Athletic Trainer is also responsible for referring student-athletes to the appropriate local medical provider including local hospital emergency department, Puget Sound Counseling Health and Wellness Services (CHWS), physicians, specialists, etc.
  • The Athletic Trainer is also responsible for monitoring and documenting all medical conditions of student-athletes.
  • The Athletic Trainer will communicate with the Puget Sound coaching staff regarding specific medical conditions of student-athletes and make appropriate participation and return to play decisions.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team-oriented environment and exercise sound judgment in complex situations

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the supervision and instruction of 12 student Athletic Training Aides (ATA). This includes daily supervision of ATA, scheduling of ATA, instruction of ATA with regard to injury treatment techniques, coordinating ATA responsibilities for practice venue and event/competition venue pre and post event sideline and emergency equipment staging and other duties as assigned.

Budget Responsibilities

The Athletic Trainer will assist the Director of Sports Medicine with bidding and purchasing of medical equipment, medical supplies and other necessary budget items related to the daily operations of the Sports Medicine Facility.

Minimum Requirements /Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in athletic training, exercise science, or a related field is preferred but not required based on previous experience
  • Must be a Certified Athletic Trainer in good standing with the Board of Certification, Inc.
  • Possess appropriate current CPR/First Aid/AED certifications.
  • A qualified candidate must also be a Licensed Athletic Trainer (LAT) in Washington State or be eligible for licensure upon hiring.
  • Two years of athletic training work experience at the collegiate level is preferred but not required.
  • Candidates must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have effective organizational and supervisory skills, the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with diverse constituencies
  • Possess an understanding of intercollegiate athletics in an academic environment.
  • Commitment to liberal arts education and NCAA Division III philosophy.
  • (> once a month) Overnight travel with intercollegiate teams
  • (Weekly) Change work schedule based on intercollegiate team schedules
  • (Daily) Have planned work flow interrupted
