Job Summary:
Furman University invites applications for the position of Director of Writing Programs. The colleague in this role will provide leadership, assessment plans, and faculty and student development in fostering a culture of writing. This pursuit will be accomplished in alignment with Furman's strategic vision, The Furman Advantage (TFA), and its linkages with Furman's inclusive excellence goals. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or a related field, provide evidence of exemplary inclusive teaching and workshop facilitation, and have the ability to assess de-centralized writing programs in the liberal arts setting. This professional will report to the Dean of Faculty and will develop productive collaborations with the Office of Institutional Assessment and Research, the Center for Academic Success, the Faculty Development Center, faculty librarians, and academic department chairs. This is a full-time administrative and teaching position with a non-tenure track academic appointment at rank commensurate with experience and accomplishments.

Job Description:

Successful applicants will have a minimum of five years of experience teaching writing at the college level, demonstrated teaching excellence, and a strong foundation of infusing courses with high-impact practices. Applicants must have formal training in writing pedagogy and a commitment to inclusive pedagogy and curriculum design.

  • Teach two to three courses in the writing program per year
  • Create appropriate structures for ensuring faculty involvement in Writing Program administration, including:
    • administration of the Writing Program budget including funding requests and opportunities for course and curricular development;
    • serving as an administrative resource to the Curriculum Committee, the Curricular Initiatives Committee, and other ad hoc, standing faculty, or administrative committees as necessary;
    • partnership with the Dean of Faculty to identify strategic alignments with appropriate committees and departments
  • Guide academic units as they design strategies for writing in the disciplines and assist in developing writing assessment plans that are both effective and sustainable
  • Develop and deliver evidence-based workshops
  • Design and administer the Faculty Writing Fellows program or similar faculty development opportunities
  • Collaborate with the:
    • Center for Academic Success and specifically the Writing and Media Lab to support student writing development;
    • Faculty Development Center to design faculty and staff development opportunities;
    • Associate Provost for Engaged Learning, the Chief Diversity Officer, and other senior leadership to ensure coordinated and strategic work across the writing program, in engaged learning opportunities, and in institutional inclusive excellence goals;
    • Faculty librarians to coordinate targeted support for information and research fluency in writing instruction;
    • and, the Office of Institutional Assessment and Research to harness data to tell the story of program effectiveness.
