General Summary/Purpose:

The Assistant Director for Workplace Accommodations manages the evaluation and implementation of workplace accommodations for JHU faculty/staff/fellows and religious accommodations for students. The Assistant Director for Workplace Accommodations will act as the central resource for accommodations in the Office of Institutional Equity, and is responsible for managing all phases of the interactive process, the monitoring and tracking of current accommodations, and troubleshooting concerns from employees/students or departments/divisions/schools.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment while managing the timely flow of information between OIE, staff, faculty, and departments/divisions/schools in the resolution of reasonable accommodation requests in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act as amended.
  • Manage case files and draft accommodation agreements for students, staff, faculty, administrators and leadership.
  • Maintain current information regarding state and federal civil rights laws and regulations that apply to employers and/or institutions of higher education.
  • Develop and sustain best practices in providing reasonable accommodations and adhering to the university’s policies and procedures for workplace accommodations and religious academic accommodations.
  • Work with the ADA Compliance Officer as a collaborative team to promote an environment of access and equal opportunity.
  • Troubleshoot concerns from employees or departments/divisions/schools and serve as a subject matter expert in the development of OIE trainings for supervisors and HR professionals.
  • Participate on University committees as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years related experience required. Advanced degree preferred. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities and interpreting and implementing Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act and disability documentation.
  • Working knowledge of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act as amended and experience administering religious accommodations and pregnancy adjustments. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and tactfully handle sensitive situations with discretion.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience in a Higher Education disability services office.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
