The Otolaryngology Department at Johns Hopkins University seeks aResearch Technologistto be responsible for independently performing routine research testing and contributing to the general maintenance of the lab, supplies and equipment. This role will also use basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab, perform laboratory experiments by following common protocols or with instruction. This may require techniques associated with molecular biology and the individual may also be responsible for cell culture and tissue bank inventory and management.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Must operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood.
  • Operates lab computers for data entry and extraction.
  • Will utilizein vivomodels in experiments following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines, sacrifice and dissect animal remains as required.
  • Inoculate cells and tissue specimens. Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical, biochemical and molecular biological techniques. Maintains accurate data records.
  • Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation courses in the workplace.
  • Completes annual University biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training as appropriate.
  • Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels, orders material and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in biology, chemistry or related field required.
  • Some related post undergraduate work experience preferred.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • HIPAA compliant training of handling of human tissue specimens.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Supervises medical students, residents, and other trainee activities in the wet laboratory.

Starting Salary Range: $15.00 - $19.44/hr (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
