Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder's Athletics Advancement Team encourages applications for a Managing Senior Director of Advancement! This position is part of a robust team that serves as the front door for Athletics Advancement on campus. The Managing Senior Director manages the Athletics Advancement team and holds a portfolio of industry partners that are capable of providing grants and making gifts at major and principal gift levels that help further the mission and goals of the university. This position is primarily responsible for crafting and implementing strategies to advance cultivation, engagement, and solicitation activities within their portfolio of industry partners, and reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Senior Associate Athletic Director.

The Managing Senior Director will provide leadership within the university community and act as the strategic partner who is responsible for developing, managing, and sustaining the university’s relationship with key external foundation partners.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Team Management

Hires and develops a team of 4-6 development officers and is responsible for their portfolio development and annual metrics via regular performance meetings and annual reviews.

Supports team in their ability to contribute to the overall annual goals.

Is an active and contributing member of the Athletics leadership team and supports the structural model of the team, helping shape the team and its activities.

Portfolio Management

Manages portfolio consisting of (30-50) prospects, developing and implementing strategies for each partner in portfolio. Maintains an active portfolio, engaging in qualification and discovery work in partnership with research team. Goals relating to personal contacts (phone, email, Zoom, in-person, travel), number of proposed gifts, grants, and prospect identification to be set with and approved by manager. Travel (once COVID restrictions are eased) on own and in partnership with colleagues and university leadership will be expected.

Coordinates with Assistant Vice Chancellor/Sr. Associate Athletic Director to maintain pipeline projections. At a Managing Senior Director level, it is expected that a majority of activity will focus on major gifts ($100k+), with a goal of growing relationships to a principal gift level ($3M+).

Ensures prospect strategies and donor intent agreements are documented, contact reports are filed, and stewardship plans are carried out. Develops letters of intent, white papers, proposals, and other documents to grow relationships with prospects. Coordinates with appropriate university partners to ensure that documents align with policies and procedures set by the university. Works to ensure timely, accurate completion of proposals, pledges and gift agreements.

Through external engagement, develops and maintains awareness of funding opportunities. Elevates high- priority initiatives to the attention of appropriate administrators and other leaders to further campus goal of securing ground-breaking partnerships. Lends leadership to shape fundraising strategies for these initiatives.

Internal and External Relations

Represents the Advancement Athletics team to key internal leaders. Understands higher education environment, working at a sophisticated level to identify and partner with key internal partners, including faculty, unit leaders, and administration. Develops trust, operating as campus leader for developing and implementing campus-level industry strategies and strategies that support individual assigned area(s). Understands the roles and responsibilities of our campus internal/boundary partners and coordinates with various internal entities to facilitate holistic relationships with industry partners. University partners include the Research and Innovation Office (RIO), academic units, Institutes and Centers, and boundary partners such as Office of Contracts and Grants (OCG), Buffalo Sports Properties, career services, the CU Foundation, and others.

Represents CU with external partners to position CU’s efforts within those organizations and more broadly as appropriate (e.g., coordination with our government affairs and outreach team on matters that impact CU Boulder and industry partnerships and strategic moves coordinating the involvement with our university leadership = President).

Represents the Athletics Advancement unit at campus and external events in order to support the University and cultivate/steward donors.

What You Should Know

M-F, 8-5; evenings and weekends; domestic travel required.

What We Can Offer

The salary range is $118,000 – $141,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Seven years of fundraising experience, or similar experience in a related area involving grant solicitation/writing or university partnership/program development required.
  • Previous experience working in an intercollegiate athletics department.


What You Will Need

  • Sophisticated knowledge of fundraising techniques. Demonstrated ability to cultivate and solicit donations from industry partners and/or individuals at major and principal gift levels.
  • Expert ability to communicate verbally and in writing, and develop and maintain interpersonal relationships. Expert ability to analyze information/situations and solve problems.
  • Expert ability to handle sensitive information discretely and maintain confidentiality.
  • Solid ability to organize and manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously; must have ability to work independently and collaboratively, and adapt to changing priorities
  • Knowledge of current issues facing public universities and interests of assigned area, students, faculty, and alumni.
  • Personal computer proficiency required, especially as related to Microsoft Office Products; MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; donor tracking software (Advance helpful). Paciolan/Spectra ticketing and donor development software.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Graduate work in related field.
  • Previous experience leading and developing people.
  • Experience as a major gift's officer with capital fundraising campaign experience (D1 experience).
