Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Academic Advisor Curriculum Coordinator will help support the advising services delivered in the University College by providing academic advising services to approximately 100 students, participating in spring and summer orientation sessions, serving on assigned task forces or committees, and other duties as assigned to support the mission of the University College. In addition, this position will serve as the Curriculum Coordinator for all University College courses including but not limited, UNI 101, 102, 201, RISE LLC spring course, UNI 101 remix (for students who did not initially pass), UNI 101 for First Year Spring Admits, and other courses as developed.
These duties include:
- Instructor support: Source and oversight of all communications with UNI 101, 102, and 201 instructors (ongoing), including the development and implementation of new instructor orientations and continuing instructor trainings such as the First-Year Studies Conference and the Instructor Kick-Off
- Instructor recruitment: Campus-wide recruitment, hiring and placement of all University College Seminars: UNI 101, 102, and 201 instructors consistent with HR/ FLAC guidelines in collaboration with the UC Business Office, and oversee the creation of UNI 101 and 201 class schedules in collaboration with Assistant Director for Curricular Engagement and Outreach
- Curriculum development and assessment: Curriculum development, revisions, and assessment in collaboration with UC Curriculum Committee (includes AD Curricular Engagement and Outreach), UC Advisory Board, and University Studies Advisory Committee ( USAC ) depending on level of revisions. Includes coordination of the development and delivery of UNI 101 textbook and/or readings (and any future textbook needs) in collaboration with the UC Curriculum Committee
- As additional University College Courses are added the Curriculum Coordinator will be responsible for their coordination, recruitment, hiring, and training of instructors and the development of curriculum for such courses in partnership with the Assistant Director for Curricular Engagement and Outreach. This will require extensive collaboration within and outside of University College
- Collaborate with campus partners for the success of University College Curriculum including UNI 101, UNI 102, Uni 201 and other courses. Such partners include Transition programs, Randall Library, and the Career Center
- Student registration: Oversee registration needs of UNI 101 and 201, including, but not limited to, the development of UNI 101 and 201 informational resources to support first-year orientation advising and registration (May – August), ensure that all freshmen are registered for UNI 101 within the first week of classes in their first semester (August/January), ensure UNI 201 students are able to register each term, monitor UNI 101 and 201 substitution/waiver requests (ongoing) and outreach to students needing to register for the UNI 101 section for students who failed the course in the fall ( UNI Remix)
- Lead and direct the UC advisor charged with the curricular aspects of UNI 201, Engineering advisors overseeing EGN 101/ UNI 102, IBEC Coordinator and instructors/sections and other intersections with First Year/New Student Seminars needs to ensure Student Learning Outcomes, processes and workflows around hiring instructors and other needs for course delivery are met
- Additional administrative duties: maintain and update the First-Year Seminar website (ongoing) and oversee UNI 101 and 201 budget and approval of instructors’ funds requests (ongoing) for classroom activities and events
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- Master’s Degree and 1-2 year of work experience within in a related university or college setting
- Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation & organizational skills
- Must have demonstrated ability to attend to details with a high degree of accuracy. · Must have evidence of previous success in working with, students, faculty, and families
- Must have proficiency with word processing, databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing and web page maintenance software
- Must have experience offering a high-level of customer service in a fast-paced environment
- Must demonstrate a commitment to working in a diverse workplace and to building a pluralistic community by promoting an increased understanding of individual differences and perspectives that will enable office cohesiveness
- Must have experience with assessment of programs and services and an ability to work independently to meet strategic goals
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Master’s Degree in higher education, college counseling, student affairs, or other closely related field
- 2-3 years of experience in higher education, preferably with teaching, curriculum development, academic advising, instructional support, or
- Previous experience in higher education working with first- and second-year students and students transitioning to a college or university setting
- Experience managing workflow processes to meet the needs of a large group of instructors, (approximately 100), or other closely related team
- Experience teaching new student seminars or other courses at the college level

The primary focus of the University College is to ensure that students: make a successful transition to UNCW, are retained in good academic standing, and identify and declare an appropriate major. Through its advisors and academic support programs, the University College works with students in their formative semesters to assist them in developing their interests, skills, and talents to the fullest extent.
The University College is the first academic home for over 3,000 new first-year students each year. First-year students (including select transfer and military students) are advised in the University College until they declare a major or pre-major. The University College also administers the following academic programs and courses: First Year Seminar, Academic Learning Communities, and Synergy: The UNCW Common Reading program in addition to supporting student who are interested in Pre-Health and pre-Law professions.
