Job Summary

**This position is an overnight shift position: Monday – Thursday 9:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m., monthly rotating schedule to weekends, Friday – Sunday 7:00 p.m. – 8: a.m. (Some flexibility will be required)

This position will provide patient care, including physical exams, medication administration (IV, IM, PO, SQ), constant patient monitoring and hygiene, for all patients admitted after hours by equine critical care, medicine, surgery and theriogenology, and all in-house patients. This position will directly instruct senior veterinary students in technical aspects of patient care. This person will also monitor the welfare of University owned horses, including those enrolled in research projects. This position will provide assistance to clinicians with procedures and receiving of emergency cases.

Essential Functions

Duties will include, but are not limited to: instruction of veterinary students in various aspects of equine patient exams, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, and general horse handling; assist clinicians, students, and residents with admission, patient restraint, and diagnostic procedures of equine cases admitted by the emergency service; provide direct patient care, including, but not limited to, physical exams, medication administration, catheter placement, nasogastric intubation, obtaining blood, fecal and urine samples, and fluid therapy; maintain floor stock and cleanliness of hospital by restocking and cleaning ICU, Isolation, main treatment areas and nurses stations in equine barns.

Requirements for Additional Job Levels

Depending on the combination of education and experience, selected candidates may be hired as a Veterinary Assistant, Technician, or Specialist and assigned levels I, II, or III .

Consideration for Veterinary Assistant II requires:
1. High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience in the care and comfort of animals

Consideration for Veterinary Technician I requires:
1. Associates degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification.
2. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

Consideration for Veterinary Specialist I requires:
1. Associates degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification plus 3 years of experience.
2. Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician or to have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ) and have met all requirements to become certified as a Veterinary Technician Specialist ( VTS ). Entry into Level II and III requires an employee to have obtained certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist ( VTS ).

Education Level

When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.
