Job Summary

Provides technical support to veterinarians diagnosing and treating food and fiber producing species including training on topics such as animal husbandry, nutrition, handling, restraint, and ethology within the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Essential Functions

Facilitates veterinary diagnostics and treatments in a safe manner by administering medications, routine vaccinations, and treatment according to prescribed instructions. Inspects facilities, equipment, and supplies daily as well as observes status of health of animals, environmental conditions, temperature, and sanitation. Assists clinicians with student examination, treatment, research, projects, surgery, restraint, sample collection in animals, and assists in emergency and critical care of patients. Safely handles and restrains food and fiber animals for treatment. Operates, maintains, repairs, and cleans hospital, laboratory and research equipment as well as maintains inventories for the laboratory and clinical area. Assist supervisor in training laboratory animal caretakers/students regarding care of animals, preventative medicine practices, collection of specimens, and handling of animal including food and fiber animals. Performs routine laboratory examinations including parasitology, bacteriology, hematology, and serology. Observes and records vital data, abnormal clinical signs, body weight, feed, water intake of animals, and collects and labels specimens. Schedules appointments for diagnostic procedures and advises referring veterinarians about the use of specialized equipment such as ultrasonography, anesthesia equipment, and other surgical supplies. Operates and maintains equipment such as loaders, skid steers, tractors, forklifts, etc. to facilitate the movement of heavy objects, animals or filler materials for stall repairs. Conducts library and internet searches, writes procedures and reports, and prepares charts and graphs as needed.
