Database Administrator I



A successful candidate will play an active role in FMU's existing academic and operational success. The Database Administrator I shall have the primary responsibility to manage relational databases. This customer-centric role will create and maintain reports in a suite of reporting tools. An accomplished IT professional will be someone who has a thorough understanding of the MS SQL database platform and have the ability to write processes and procedures in Transact-SQL.

Essential Duties:

Communicate with faculty and staff and translate the institution's needs into operational procedures and systems. This position requires the ability to function successfully in both team and independent work environments. Provide emergency 24 x 7 on-call support on a rotating basis.
  • Build database systems of high availability and quality depending on each end user’s specialized role.
  • Design and implement database in accordance to end user's information needs and views.
  • Define users and enable data distribution to the right user, in the appropriate format, and in a timely manner.
  • Use high-speed transaction recovery techniques and backup data.
  • Minimize database downtime and manage parameters to provide fast query responses.
  • Provide proactive and reactive data management support and training to users.
  • Determine, enforce and document database policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Perform tests and evaluations regularly to ensure data security, privacy, and integrity.
  • Monitor database performance, implement changes, and apply new patches and versions when required
  • Perform a wide range of database administration duties including installations, debugging, maintenance, upgrades, and general support for Cisco, Juniper, HP, Nortel, and Extreme network equipment.
  • Coordinate with the rest of the IMT team to meet the team objectives.
  • Provide emergency 24 x 7 on-call support on a rotating basis.
  • Diagnoses and resolves complex problems in the university network core and building LANs.
  • Reviews and designs the network to provide a high level of security to protect the institution’s assets and data.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to fifty (50) pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Qualifications:
  • The successful candidate must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (master's degree preferred), in Networking, Computer Science, Information Technology. Three plus years of progressive management experience, or related work experience (relevant experience - field preferred – and education may be considered in lieu of a degree).
  • Proven working experience as a Database Administrator. Hands-on experience with database standards and end-user applications.
  • Excellent knowledge of data backup, recovery, security, integrity, and SQL.
  • Previous experience with DBA case tools (frontend/backend) and third-party tools.
  • Familiarity with programming languages API
  • Significant experience working with Windows servers and network monitoring tools.
  • Strong knowledge of networking, including TCP/IP, VLANs, Ethernet, SONET, switching, routing, and routing protocols (BGP/OSPF), 802.1Q, and DNS.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.
