The Upper Division Advising Center within University College at Ball State University welcomes applications for the position of Academic Advisor for Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences from individuals who are passionate about assisting undergraduate students in their journey of discovery and persistence to degree completion. Working under the direction of an Academic Advising Coordinator, this advisor will manage an assigned caseload of students and provide comprehensive academic advising and student success strategies.

The Academic Advisor for Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences will assist the departments in endeavors related to student academic success. The advisor will guide students in understanding their degree requirements, academic policies, university procedures, and the university resources available to make informed decisions regarding their degree program. Academic Advising within University College at Ball State University is uniquely organized to serve the needs of freshmen students and upper division students. The dynamic mix of advisors and programs in each unit overlap and collaborate in activities beneficial to students and colleagues alike with an opportunity to participate in professional networks such as the Indiana Academic Advising Network ( IAAN ).

Position Function

Serve as the primary academic advisor to approximately 300 upper-division students holding academic majors in Computer Science or Mathematical Sciences; support students in understanding and meeting academic requirements; assist students in maintaining state-mandated four-year degree maps; promote strategies for student success; advise transfer students on program requirements and course equivalencies; serve as referral agent to other university services; facilitate communication between assigned students and the Department of Computer Science or the Department of Mathematical Sciences; participate in appropriate events as requested by the Department of Computer Science or the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the Office of Admissions, and the Office of Orientation.

Minimum Education

Master’s degree by date of appointment.

Minimum Experience

One year of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related field.

Minimum Other

Ability to work with faculty, administration, and undergraduate students; ability to work in a collaborative environment and work independently; sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, interpersonal/human relations skills; ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions; ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the university; ability to identify students’ needs for support services in order to make appropriate referrals; ability to maintain confidentiality.

Experience in higher education; familiarity with Ball State curriculum; familiarity with Banner and Degree Works.

Duties & Responsibilities



Job Duty

Meet with assigned load of approximately 350 upper-division students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues such course planning and registration, major-specific requirements, and academic progress.

Keep up-to-date information on university academic requirements, policies, and procedures as outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog and in departmental handbooks.



Job Duty

Provide support to students in maintaining individualized four-year degree plans as mandated by the State of Indiana.



Job Duty

Train students to interpret the Degree Works degree audit.



Job Duty

Participate in appropriate admissions and orientation events; serve as departmental liaison for new transfer students; work collaboratively with academic departments to assist in the evaluation of transfer course equivalencies.



Job Duty

Promote strategies for success with students including time management, study tips, and participation in tutoring and supplemental instruction sessions; provide additional intervention with assigned students on academic probation.



Job Duty

Create advising reports as requested by administrators for the Departments of Computer Science or the Department of Mathematical Sciences using Banner, Argos, and Degree Works.



Job Duty

Coordinate with Teachers College regarding current teacher education and licensure requirements; understand and explain decision point status information for teaching majors in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.



Job Duty

Work collaboratively with faculty in providing effective advising services to assigned students.

Serve as a referral agent to other university resources and services.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
