Under the general direction of the Director of the Center for Disability Access and Resources (CDAR) the Assistant Director works to ensure equal access for students with disabilities in all aspects of campus life, as specified by the mandates of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAA), the Fair Housing Act, state and university policies.
The Assistant Director is responsible for identifying and implementing reasonable accommodations, determining eligibility, providing advocacy support and providing case management to students with disabilities. The Assistant Director acts as a resource to the campus community on disability access topics and collaborates with faculty and staff to proactively remove barriers through inclusive initiatives such as universal design. Additionally, the Assistant Director will serve as a liaison and mediator between student and university staff and faculty regarding accommodation-related concerns. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with the CDAR Director to provide oversight, improvements in programs and services, and shared representation on campus-wide committees, events, and activities.
• A bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, social work, psychology, or closely related field from an accredited institution.
• Three years of post-graduate professional experience coordinating services to individuals with disabilities;
• Interviewing experience relevant to disability determination;
• Experience utilizing computer applications to produce presentations, correspondence, and reports;
• Experience analyzing information, identifying problems, defining alternatives and developing recommendations for management;
• Experience interpreting, applying and explaining laws to others.
• Master’s degree in social work, special education, vocational rehabilitation counseling, counseling, or closely related field;
• Experience providing support to individuals with mental health or learning disabilities;
• Knowledge of disability laws (Sec. 504, ADA, ADAAA) and appropriate services/accommodations for students with disabilities at the post-secondary level;
• Excellent verbal communication, written communication, and interpersonal skills;
• Experience using professional judgment to solve problems and make sound decisions;
• Experience using case management type software;
• Ability to teach learning strategies to students with disabilities, particularly related to executive functioning disorders;
• Ability to mediate issues that arise in the implementation of accommodations;
• Strong organizational skills and proven ability to multi-task;
• Experience working with individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
