The Department of Neurosurgery seeks aResearch Assistant who will coordinate and implement research activities of the lab under the supervision of a faculty investigator, Dr. Amir Manbachi.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Research Coordination:

    Responsible for weekly revisiting of the grant’s Statement of the Work (SoW) contract deliverables and assisting the PI to communicate the responsibilities / deliverables, as well as the expected timelines to the internal employees or external sub-contractors. Responsible for the monthly progress report slides as well as quarterly technical report documents required by the funding agency sponsoring their source of salaries. This involves summarizing the scientific activities of the lab members as well as external sub-contractors.
General Lab Administration:

    Participate with PI and the lab / office managers on design and implementation of routine experimental and operating procedures. Maintain the laboratory for demo and tour purposes at all times. Take the lead in terms of social media platforms, website management and monthly newsletters. Attend and take notes at lab meetings. Supervise undergraduate and masters’ students

Grant Writing:

  • Participate with PI on grant applications, non-competing renewals, and progress slides / reports.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff regarding grant submissions, as necessary.
Sonography/Radiology Experiments:

    Liaise between lab and the collaborators from the department of Radiology. Learn from the sonographer collaborator and conduct routine operations with the ultrasound systems, as well as training other members in the lab on his / her experimental setups. Coordinate participant visits, collect data, maintain records and regulatory documentation.

Data Analysis/ Data Management:

  • Setup and maintain a number of ultrasound systems, medical simulation mannequins and animal studies equipment.
  • Conduct data analysis of benchtop and animal surgeries studies.
  • Maintain HIPAA-compliant participant database.
  • Maintain data archives.
  • Organize files.
  • Assist in experimental design and implementation.

Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
  • Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
