The Department of International Health seeks aSenior Research Program Coordinator II who has knowledge and expertise in infectious disease as it's needed to coordinate MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) surveillance activities at Maryland health care facilities as part of the Maryland Emerging Infections (MD EIP)/Active Bacterial Core Surveillance Program (ABC’s) and Healthcare Associated Infections Community Interface (HAIC).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Function as the primary contact for all MD ABC’s MRSA activities including MRSA cases, pathogen, and source identification and classification. Serve as an onsite resource for information and consultation for other ABC’s activities.
  • Review information submitted by hospitals and laboratories to identify cases, confirmation of case residency and pathogen source information.
  • Conduct reviews of patient charts at reporting facilities and completing case report forms, and enter and maintain case information in an Access database.
  • Provide oversight and direction to other project staff in completing MRSA surveillance activities to ensure timely completion and reporting of data.
  • In addition to MRSA surveillance, the MD ABC’s conducts statewide surveillance of other emerging infectious diseases in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The Coordinator will interact with project officials at CDC, respond to information requests from CDC, and prepare study reports.
  • Periodically conduct other surveillance program activities and/or special projects as needed.
  • Must have a reliable form of transportation for statewide travel and be willing to travel to healthcare facilities throughout Maryland.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
  • 5 years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Experience in infectious disease surveillance, clinical trials.
  • Experience conducting reviews of clinical charts.
  • Computer literate with MS Access database experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology related to infectious disease identification and treatment.
  • Knowledge of the identification and treatment of infectious disease and experience in infectious disease prevention/control or clinical trials.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks and competing priorities.
  • Able to maintain several ongoing project activities.
  • Able to respond to varying demands.
  • Able to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Able to anticipate and identify problems and develop solutions.
  • Excellent organizations skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to completely and accurately identify and record information.
  • Highly developed verbal and written skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of Institutional Review Boards, Protected Health Information, and Clinical Trial components.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
