The IT@Peabody Systems and Support Team seeks aSystems Engineer who will work as technical systems lead in the reporting directly to the IT Manager, Systems and Support. The Systems Engineer will maintain existing systems, as well as researching, recommending, and implementing new technical systems. They will have primary responsibility for local multimedia storage systems, a fleet of Linux and Windows virtual machines running mission critical applications, and core network infrastructure, including Cisco switches and Wi-Fi access points throughout campus. This individual will lead the continued development and maintenance of physical and virtual network infrastructure on the main Peabody campus as well as three satellite campuses, working closely with vendors to ensure that copper and fiber cable plant function as needed.

This role will be responsible for working closely with functional systems users and IT colleagues to construct functional requirements for new systems and develop maintenance plans for existing systems. They will be responsible for the continued migration of on-premises systems to cloud based SaaS solutions, as well as the consolidation of systems and the reduction of Peabody’s virtual machine footprint. The Systems Engineer will also take primary responsibility for the Microsoft Teams Voice-based phone system, ensuring that voice and video communications are reliable and operating at the highest levels. The incumbent will be responsible for managing an inventory of technical systems as well as working to identify approaches to streamline systems, increasing efficiency, and reducing costs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Install, monitor, and maintain - including regular updates/upgrades and collaboration with system vendors - Linux and Windows virtual machine infrastructure for the following applications: digital signage, ITSM service desk, large scale SNS EVO video storage systems, print management, remote access. Work closely with system users and IT colleagues to ensure that server systems perform as required and meet system user functional needs. Work in close collaboration with IT@JH to configure, install, monitor, and maintain Cisco network switches and Wi-Fi access points. Assess network and Wi-Fi performance and ensure systems are optimized for coverage and signal strength. Apply advanced knowledge of Cisco iOS switch commands to troubleshoot network issues and configure the network to accommodate new applications and systems. Troubleshoot and resolve issues with O365 applications such as SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft 365 Apps., including Teams Voice-based phone system. Troubleshoot and resolves desktop PC/Macintosh issues, server issues, as related to LAN. Perform critical thinking to evaluate and resolve technical or procedural problems. Assists in creation of complex functional and procedural guides and white papers; assists others to prepare on-call documentation. Keeps all groups informed of project progress, produces critical path, and completed task reports. Maintains contact with outside organizations in the maintenance, service and/or purchase of the LAN. Takes the lead on Windows and Linux server hardware configuration, set up and manage system monitoring tools; set up automatic software distribution packages; involved in testing, investigating, recommendation, and implementation tools to support environment. Support, install, maintain, and troubleshoot all LAN devices and related software for multiple branch offices as well as internal and external networks.

Additional Responsibilities:

    Defines and discerns key aspects of a problem and develops an integrated solution within a broad technical and business context. Provides technical leadership, project coordination, and vendor management within the organization. Generally, works independently. Has wider range of autonomy and is responsible for meeting deliverables without supervision. Provides broad technical support and focused training to functional users. Mentors less senior IT personnel as well as user community with their expert knowledge of the applications and systems. Ability to describe technical issues to non-technical groups.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 5 years of related experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • 3+ years managing and maintaining large scale storage systems.
  • 5+ years managing Cisco based Ethernet networks 5+ years managing Windows and Linux virtual servers Solid knowledge of Active Directory resource management, DNS, and DHCP. Strong understanding of and experience with system virtualization and virtual machine orchestration Excellent communication skills verbal and written Is a team-player who can also work independently M365, Azure, or AWS experience is highly desirable.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job.
