The Otolaryngology Department Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University seeks aResearch Technologist. This individual will be responsible for performing precise neuroanatomical circuit tracing and electrophysiological recording techniques and analyses, under supervision and independently, as well contributing to the general maintenance of the lab, supplies and equipment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Will conduct and analyze electrophysiological signals and axonal projection data.
  • Conduct auditory and other behavior tests in mice.
  • Perform stereotaxic surgeries and perfusions in mice.
  • Perform histological processing, including immunohistochemistry.
  • Must operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood.
  • Operates lab computers for data entry and extraction.
  • Will utilizein vivomodels in experiments following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines.
  • Inoculate tumors, sacrifice and dissect animal remains as required. Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques. Maintains accurate data records.
  • Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation courses in the workplace.
  • Completes annual University biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training as appropriate.
  • Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels, orders material and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in biology, chemistry or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related post undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Experience with electrophysiological recordings.
  • Familiarity with brain circuits in vertebrate animals, particularly the cerebellum, brainstem, and thalamus.
  • Experience with precise stereotaxic surgeries and histological analyses.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Cerebellar anatomy.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
