Instructor, Simulation Director (Non-Tenure Track)


Location: University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Baltimore, MD.

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is conducting an open search for an Instructor, Simulation Director in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science. This is a full-time, non-tenure, 12-month faculty appointment within the School of Pharmacy that is supported by the UMB Physician Assistant Program. The Simulation Director will oversee the entire simulation space located in the School of Pharmacy in addition to other simulation space accessible to the UMB Physician Assistant Program. This includes serving as an educator and facilitator of simulation-based training and evaluation, designing, and conducting training protocols and assessments for students, identifying and training individuals to serve as standardized patients, managing the maintenance/service requirements and records for simulation equipment (models, task trainers, high-definition simulation manikins, and computer/video/sound equipment, etc.), and providing data reports to the participating entities.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore campus houses schools of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, Social Work, Law and Dentistry. Additionally, the School of Pharmacy has a satellite campus at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland. This position is responsible to the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science with teaching responsibility to the Schools of Pharmacy and Graduate School.

  • Manage, operate, and oversee maintenance of technologic equipment and task trainers, including computer-based systems, video equipment, high-definition and static manikins, and screen-based simulation/virtual reality surgical simulators, etc.
  • Deliver intercultural communication, leadership, health science research, quality improvemen t instruction to professional students.
  • Evaluate and grade students' coursework, assignments, and papers within the timeframe set forth by the School policy providing effective feedback to guide student learning and success. Engage in the classroom/online and reply to emails within the School of Pharmacy policy. Provide appropriate feedback on all course work.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and best practices for operational efficiency of the Simulation program/space.
  • Develop and execute training scenarios and assessments relevant to each School’s needs (e.g. emergency situations, sentinel events, surgical and medical skills, age-appropriate interventions across the lifespan, etc.).
  • Ensure quality curriculum design, discipline, program and course continuity, currency, and relevance. Analyze courses and prepare analysis for program and course reviews.
  • Update course content and materials and/or delivery methods, based on information such as emerging medical practice changes in the discipline, instructional effectiveness data, current or future performance requirements, feasibility, and costs.
  • Coordinate scheduling of events in the simulation spaces to accommodate the School of Pharmacy and PA Program as prioritized participants.
  • Collaborate with faculty educators and other stakeholders on the development and delivery of simulation and standardized patient activities for training and assessment.
  • Identify and train individuals to serve as standardized patients for simulation experiences that require live interaction.
  • Train standardized patients on providing feedback to students. Ensure interrater reliability among standardized patients.
  • Instruct faculty, staff, and students on the use of simulation and standardized patient best practices related to assessment and feedback.
  • Provide summary reports for each participant following scheduled events, as needed.
  • Participate in professional development to enhance teaching skills, scholarship and service. Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging technologies by participating in trainings and conferences.
  • Perform literature search and review on simulation topics to support events and make them relevant.
  • Participate in scholarly work in conjunction with Pharmacy School policies for faculty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Expertise in Simulation Education, assessment, and equipment maintenance management.


Participate in service contributions to Simulation Education activities through serving on appropriate committees associated with the program.

Participation in appropriate faculty activities (e.g. faculty assembly, department meetings, and faculty committees), professional organizations, and other endeavors is also expected.


Participate in research related to simulation and other areas of interest. Goal to publish original research and review papers yearly. Additional scholarship goals in faculty handbook and will be set yearly with the Chair.

Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in simulation education is preferred; Master’s degree in healthcare-related field plus 5 years of experience in a field related to simulation and 2 years of clinical education experience .
  • Licensure/Certification: Previous or current licensure as a healthcare provider is preferred; Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator® (CHSE®) certification is highly preferred; Certified Healthcare Simulation Operation Specialist® (CHSOS®) highly preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare and knowledge of behavioral and population health is preferred.
  • Prior teaching experience in a healthcare-related setting is required.
  • Experience in curriculum development is recommended.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs required.
  • Record of excellence in teaching.
  • Professional conduct in all dealings with students, faculty or administration.
  • Communications - Knowledge of communication and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform via written, oral, and visual media.
  • Education - Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum design principals, evidence- based teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and knowledge of measurement and assessment.
  • Initiative - Willing and able to take on responsibilities and challenges.
  • Leadership - Willing and able to lead; take charge, and offer opinions and direction.
  • Learning Strategies - Selecting and using instructional methods and procedures appropriate in the discipline family when learning or teaching new things.
  • Technical operations of simulation equipment, computers and audiovisual equipment is required.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty, standardized patients, and organizational administrators is required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to clinical locations as needed.
  • Monitoring - Monitoring/assessing curricula to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Stress Tolerance -Ability to accept criticism and deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations.
