    The Assistant Director for Wellness will join a dedicated team of health and mental health providers within a busy integrated center composed of counseling, medical, and wellness education services for students. Reporting to the Director of Counseling, Health & Wellness (CHW), the Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive and holistic health promotion program that is primarily focused upon college students and which intentionally addresses multicultural and social justice needs. The Assistant Director serves as a member of the CHW Senior Leadership Team and the CHW Outreach Team. The Assistant Director works closely with the offices of Residence Life, Diversity and Inclusion, Title IX, Student Involvement, Orientation, the Dean of Students office and other members of the University community to promote student physical and mental wellness and healthy decision-making. The Assistant Director will recruit, train and supervise student peer health educators regarding physical and mental health outreach programming and will oversee operations/programs in the CHW Wellness Resource Center. Depending on credentials and training, candidates may have the opportunity to engage in direct clinical work providing brief therapy and crisis intervention to Suffolk students.

    CHW is committed to providing culturally responsive services to students and the campus community. Successful candidates for the position will have training and experience working with historically underrepresented students including Black/African American, Indigenous/First Nations, Latinx, Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander, Multiracial and other students of Color, international students, and/or students who identify as LGBTQIA+. Successful candidates will also demonstrate an understanding of the strengths of these students, the impact that inequality, prejudice, and marginalization can have on people from historically under-served populations, and have applied knowledge of multicultural theory in professional practice, especially pertaining to outreach, prevention, and public health work.

    Responsibilities
    • Oversee the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of theory and evidence-based comprehensive holistic health promotion programming that educates and empowers students, including oversight of programming/operations in the CHW Wellness Resource Center. Develop strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for health promotion programs and services. Topics can include but are not limited to alcohol and other drugs, sexual violence prevention, sexual health, healing from oppression, nutrition, stress management, resiliency and self-care, sleep, healthy eating, depression, anxiety, etc. Maintain content on CHW website related to the SUPERS, Wellness Education, and the Wellness Resource Center. Note: Collaboration with the interdisciplinary health, counseling and wellness team in the development and implementation of Wellness programs and activities is important.
    • Hire, train, manage, supervise, and evaluate Graduate Assistants, Peer Educators (SUPERs) and work-study students to assist in the implementation of health promotion activities and to staff the CHW Wellness Resource Center.
    • Coordinate Social Media presence for CHW. Assist and supervise Peer Educators to develop and post content utilizing the Peer Educator Social Media accounts. Evaluate and develop strategy for CHW Center social media presence, including intentional collaboration with CHW staff in health and counseling regarding content development.
    • Direct and conduct routine needs and outcome assessments to determine baseline and strategic planning data which assist in identification of departmental needs and priorities, the evaluation of intervention effectiveness, and to help track and benchmark Suffolk trends regarding student health behaviors. Examples include NCHA survey, AlcoholEdu data, HAVEN data, and CHW outreach program evaluations.
    • If the candidate holds an independent mental health license, they may engage in direct mental health care practice including brief counseling, crisis intervention, and assisting with referrals off-campus.
    • In collaboration with the CHW Administrative Coordinator/Budget & Technology, oversee, plan and manage Wellness Education operating budget and expenditures.
    • Participate in CHW staff meetings, CHW Senior Leadership Team meetings, CHW Student Affairs professional development programs and Student Affairs divisional meetings. Serve on university committees as appropriate in support of student wellness; actively participate in professional organizations, including but not limited to ACHA, NECHA, BACCHUS, etc. Other duties as assigned by the CHW Director.

    Requirements
    • Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Work, Counseling, Education or a related field. 2+ years of experience in health promotion, violence prevention, and/or substance abuse prevention. Demonstrated interest in community-based, preventative care in a college health setting. Leadership skills and the ability to supervise undergraduate peer health educators and graduate level administrative support staff. Strong knowledge and comfort developing wellness programming related to mental health, sexual violence prevention, sexual health, AODA, self-care and stress management, and other topics for a multicultural and diverse student population.
    • Ability to develop strategic plans and wellness intervention programming with measurable outcomes for health promotion programs and services.
    • Excellent group facilitation and public speaking skills.
    • Ability to build relationships and establish collaborative partnerships across the institution.
    • Strong interpersonal and self-awareness skills related to personal identity and working within a socioculturally diverse staff and student population.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of the application of anti-oppression and social justice principles to health promotion and ability to support colleagues and students engaging in social justice work.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience working in higher education settings.
    • Licensure as a mental health provider and experience working with adolescents or young adults in short-term setting.
    • Knowledge of national regulations and recommendations for health promotion departments such as ACHA, NASPA, SOPHE, CAS Standards.
    • Interest and knowledge in a holistic health model and integrated care settings.
