Position Summary:

The Department of Entomology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a national and international leader in basic and applied aspects of insect biology, and has expertise ranging from molecular and sub-organismal biology to applied ecology. A core strength of the department is in public health and medical entomology. We are home to the Global Health undergraduate major as well as the Midwest Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Disease (MCE-VBD), a regional hub for training and research related to vector-borne diseases of humans. We seek to further develop these strengths with a new position in vector biology and disease ecology, with a candidate serving a leadership role in the Global Health major, and with the desire to participate in, and contribute to, the research and outreach mission of the MCE-VBD.

We specifically seek to hire a Vector Biologist or Ecologist with expertise in arthropods that transmit human and/or zoonotic pathogens. Research areas that would be appropriate for this position are broadly in the area of vector biology, and may include strengths in arthropod/pathogen interactions at multiple scales (molecular/suborganismal, organismal, population, community, and regional scales), innovative strategies for management and control, and the emergence and transmission of vector-borne infectious disease. Research that incorporates a global health or international component is also desirable.

The successful candidate will bring or develop a strong, independent, extramurally funded research program; develop an innovative undergraduate and graduate teaching program; build collaborative relationships in research and instructional programs; and contribute to service and outreach functions of the Department, College, University and professional societies.

This position is a tenure-track or tenured, academic year appointment at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. The position carries a commitment to the three important functions of instruction, research, and outreach, as well as professional and university service as appropriate to Faculty rank.

Principal Duties:

1) Carry out a vigorous, collaborative, externally funded research focusing upon the interactions of arthropods, pathogens and the environment, leading to applications and discoveries to improve prevention and management of disease.
2) Teach undergraduate, graduate, or professional students in the tenure home department curricula. Provide support for education within graduate programs.
* Provide leadership for the undergraduate Global Health programs including teaching in one or more introductory or capstone courses in Global Health. Develop a second course in their specific area of interest.
* Contribute to the department's graduate seminar series and mentor undergraduate students in independent studies.
* Train graduate students and post-doctoral researchers.
3) Contribute and participate in professional, university, and community service appropriate to rank.
4) Contribute to programs aimed at increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the department and university. Promote an inclusive and diverse climate within our campus and associated communities.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

PhD in Entomology, Comparative Biosciences, Ecology, or closely related field, with expertise in vector-borne diseases of humans required. Interest and scholarly experience in vector biology and zoonotic disease in a global context is preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Candidates at the Assistant Professor level must have at least 2 years of experience in a postdoctoral or equivalent position. Preference will be given to candidates with a record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, success in attracting extramural funding, and with excellent teaching skills.

Associate Professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials suitable for appointment with tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a sustained record of professional achievement as indicated by outstanding teaching, sponsored research and publications, and demonstrated leadership activities in the field.
