The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University’s integrated health and wellness center which incorporates health promotion, counseling, health and recreation. The Assistant Director is a newly developed position and is a core member of the Health Promotion Leadership team as well as the Health and Wellness leadership team. As part of the Health Promotion team, the The Assistant Director for Public Health Initiatives is responsible for overseeing new and expanded public health initiatives to support the health and well-being of the student community. This includes building a substance use recovery program, leading university-wide wellness coalitions to support change at all levels of the socioecological model, and developing faculty/staff trainings to better support students.

This position proactively partners with populations of students on campus (student organizations, student government, cultural center peer mentors, etc.) to address health disparities and improve public health priorities, like mental health, high risk substance use, and sexual and relationship violence. The Assistant Director supervises the Health Promotion Specialist and is responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of University-wide health and wellness coalitions. Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in a related field, such as public health, health promotion, health education, health policy, or health communications is required.
  • Requires Three (3) plus years of experience in the field of wellness education and prevention with progressively increasing responsibilities. Some supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Advanced certification such as Certified Health Education Specialist ( CHES ), Master Certified Health Education Specialist ( MCHES ), or Certified in Public Health ( CPH ), or certification eligible, strongly preferred
Job Specific Qualifications
  • A strong background in the development of primary prevention programs in an institution of higher education.
  • Familiarity with college student wellness concerns such as alcohol and other drugs, mental health and wellness, high-risk behavior, sexual and relationship violence, etc.
  • Experience conducting needs assessments and understanding the connection of these results to potential programmatic decision and budget allocations.
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, program evaluations, interpreting findings, and developing plans to programmatically and strategically respond to the findings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of health promotion and behavior change theories and models, as well as implementing evidence-based programs/initiatives.
  • Knowledge of the ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing and implementing environmental and policy changes activities and strategies.
  • Excellent presentation/oral, written and interpersonal communications skills, including communicating data and assessment findings to a wide array of audiences.
  • Demonstrated understanding of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and application of these principles within the context of health promotion and social justice.
Responsibilities
  • Leads University-wide Wellness Coalitions, utilizing data to drive public health prioritization and planning and evidence-based strategies to promote change.
  • Supervises the health promotion specialist, which includes weekly supervision meetings, setting goals for performance and deadlines, and organizing workflow to support coalition building and public health initiatives.
  • Responsible for the management of the coalitions, including determining membership, recruitment, onboarding, scheduling meetings, and engaging coalitions in meaningful, impactful public health work
  • Establishes and maintain partnerships with academic affairs to create and support initiatives like faculty training (i.e., trauma-informed spaces).
  • Establishes the strategic direction for developing public health priorities for the student population. Regularly assesses and reports on public health initiatives and their impact on retention.
  • Participates on appropriate Health and Wellness committees including the health and wellness leadership team and the Barnes Center Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Committee.
  • Oversees the development and supervision of a substance use recovery program for students.
