Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprised of five different departments plus the Dean’s office, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 1,700 undergraduate and 250 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 600 full-time, part-time, and student employees.

The VCU College of Engineering Office of Student Services is the hub of information for students as they navigate their way through their academic career. Committed to fostering an environment that encourages students to become responsible, engaged, and empowered community members while providing a complete university experience that is student-centered and focused on meeting our students’ developmental and learning needs. The Office of Student Services invites candidates to apply for the position of Enrollment Counselor.

Specifically, duties include:

  • Establish relationships with students, parents, counselors who have shown an interest in learning more about the undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Engineering. Coordinate the development of new recruitment techniques to build new markets to identify and attract potential students.
  • Establishes relationships with schools in and around Virginia where VCU is currently underrepresented.
  • Represents the College at special events such as receptions, conferences, and open houses.
  • Coordinates and conducts open houses, information sessions, interviews, and counseling sessions with prospective students and their parents to provide information about the College, admissions processes, and university policies and procedures.
  • Routinely interfaces with University officials on admissions/recruitment issues.
  • Evaluates data and applicant credentials for admission and counsels prospective students on their admissibility.
  • Handles assignments timely and makes decisions independently with minimal guidance from supervisor.

Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience working with high school and/or college-aged students (teaching, counseling, advising, or other administrative roles may qualify
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in public speaking and interaction skills
  • Strong comfort level with making presentations to small and large groups
  • Experience in event and project planning
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Responsible, mature, self-starter with good judgment and the ability to handle sensitive/confidential matters are essential qualities
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and ability to work with a diverse population
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Tech savvy with the ability to use common office software applications (MS Office, Google Suite, virtual conference applications, database skills, etc)
  • Availability to work off normal hours, including weekends, and travel
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and years of experience

Preferred Hiring Standards

  • Considerable experience in college admissions, recruitment, or marketing
  • Knowledge of admissions/recruitment procedures
  • Experience with admissions/recruitment CRM, Slate preferred
  • Experience with graphic design and software
  • Experience using social media as a marketing tool
