Position Summary:
Job Summary The Coordinator for the Johnson Center of Civic Engagement (JCCE) works to foster a campus culture that inspires civic leadership and social responsibility while instilling a lifelong commitment to service. Areas of responsibility include the management of the Johnson Center, leadership of several significant service programs as well as monthly service and civic engagement programs or events, oversight of the center budget and endowed funds, and collaboration with faculty and staff on service-learning, civic engagement, sustainability, and social justice activities. This is a 12-month position reporting to the Career Development Center. On campus room and board may be available and requires participating in campus life on call responsibilities. The year ahead will include assessment of the JCCE. As such, this position is designed to anticipate change and will be a 1-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. Specific Responsibilities
  • Oversee the general operation of the Johnson Center for Civic Engagement including supervision of student staff and an AmeriCorps VISTA when applicable.
  • Coordinate the summer pre-orientation service-learning experience (SU SPLASH) for first-year students.
  • Manage SU GIVE, SU SERVE, ALV, and other annual large-scale programs for the campus community.
  • Provide leadership for monthly service and civic engagement programs such as blood drives, voter registration, volunteer recruitment, etc.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student staff including program assistants, SPLASH mentors, GIVE and SERVE student coordinators, etc.
  • Partner with faculty who are embedding service-learning in courses.
  • Manage service-hour submission and tracking using campus software systems in collaboration with the Office of Leadership and Engagement.
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners to connect students to service and volunteer opportunities and support events of the Career Development Center relevant to the mission of the JCCE.
  • Assess program outcomes and assist with donor stewardship.
  • Maintain ongoing professional development via involvement with relevant professional organizations.

    Required Qualifications:
    Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesKnowledge of current issues and emerging trends regarding service-learning and civic engagement. Demonstrated experience working with community engagement initiatives, with a focus on connecting academic and community-based experiences. Knowledge of program coordination, student development theory, and student mentorship strategies. Demonstrated competence and capacity for diversity and inclusion. Excellent communication skills. Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team. Skilled at managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Able to work occasional nights and weekends. Exhibited success in navigating the complexities and challenges of both community partnership and student professional development. Education and ExperienceMaster’s degree in higher education, public policy, social work, sustainable development or similar field or a combination of bachelor’s degree and two years of significant relevant work experience (AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, etc.) required as is demonstrated experience in program design and implementation.
    Physical Demand Typical office environment: Position requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time and to move about the campus. Position requires the ability to talk and to hear instruction. Position requires manual dexterity and the ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Education and Experience
    One to three years of experience in higher education and experience in student-staff oversight as well as collaboration with faculty, staff, and community partners preferred.
