Job Description

The research groups of Dr. Eric Jacques and Dr. Scott Case in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech are hiring a post-doctoral research associate to study the workforce development challenges that the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Facilities Management (AEC/FM) industry must overcome to adopt Construction 4.0 technologies. The current civil infrastructure ecosystem is highly decentralized and risk-adverse, incentivizing long-term, static, and resource intensive solutions that accelerate climate change and cannot easily adapt to the evolving needs of dynamic social, economic, and natural environments. There is an opportunity to re-invent the built environment from a complete lifecycle perspective, using energy-efficient materials, encouraging efficient behaviors, designing modular and recyclable systems, and economically encouraging infrastructure adaptation rather than new construction. However, realizing this future will require that the AEC/FM industry (re)skill all levels of the workforce to embrace key concepts driving Construction 4.0, including cyber-physical systems, digital data, automation, and full-life cycle connectivity. The successful applicant will lead research funded to understand the extent to which the United States is prepared for the changing nature of the Construction 4.0 workforce in the AEC/FM industry. The successful applicant will be expected to converge new research at the nexus between engineering education and workforce development with the future built environment.
The post-doc will be based in CEE and collaborate with multiple, diverse stakeholders across disciplines, including engineering, engineering education, technology, construction, architecture, and the social, behavioral, and economic sciences. The post-doc job responsibilities will include:
-Performing and publishing research related to workforce development and Construction 4.0
-Assisting with grant preparation
-Organizing a workshop to be held virtually (planning, organizing, executing, curating proceedings, etc.), working in collaboration with a transdisciplinary team across campus
-Teaching one graduate or undergraduate-level course in structural engineering
-Mentoring students
The preferred start date is October 2021 or sooner. Applicants must apply online at jobs.vt.edu. A complete application will include a CV, a brief cover letter that includes a statement of interest and what you could contribute to the project, and a list of three references with contact information. Questions should be directed to ejacques@vt.edu and scase@vt.edu. Review of applications will begin August 1, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. Applicants must have completed their PhD by the starting date.
