WSE Manufacturing seeks aMakerspace Manager (Teaching Laboratory Coordinator) to manage daily operations of the JHU Makerspace including but not limited to training and supervising student workers, implementing and maintaining safety protocols, tracking equipment use, scheduling and performing maintenance, regulating access to areas throughout the space such as general access, wood working, metal working and the paint booth. Work closely with the FFU staff to coordinate events and maintain good communication.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining the safety of the lab/shop environment and of the students.
  • Train and manage a team of student workers.
  • Maintain all equipment including Rapid Prototype Machines, Laser Cutters, Milling Machine, Lathe Machine, Drill Press, Grinders, Sanders, Vinyl Cutter, Paint Booth, etc…
  • Manage supplies and material stock for users.
  • Train students in the mandatory safety course as well as all additional trainings for individual equipment.
  • Ensure user supervision within the shop during scheduled hours. The applicant must be available to answer questions and enforce strict safety protocols.
  • Track use of equipment and maintain equipment use logs for budgeting purposes.
  • Acquire outside funding by applying for federal funds through grants or other means such as donations or sponsorships.
  • Manage and maintain website and social media accounts
  • Create multi-media content to advertise facility, Maker community, and partnerships
  • Manage events and classes designed to promote community and bring funding to the Makerspace
  • Develop instructional material that establishes training standards for equipment and tools

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent education and training in engineering and machine shop operations required.
  • 3 years of related experience required. Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety protocols as it relates to a manufacturing environment.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required to train and instruct students on the appropriate operation of equipment.
  • Organizational, time management, and planning (short and long term) skills are essential.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • Qualified candidate will have a high level of technical skills for all required equipment.
  • Working knowledge of CAD highly desirable.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational safety and health guidelines as they relate to basic shop use.
  • Operational knowledge of machining equipment including but not limited to 3D printing, laser cutter, Milling, Lathe, drill press, shear, hand brake, etc. required.
  • Thorough operational knowledge of personal computers.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
